I just bought a 12 string Celebrity from Guitar Center. The sales person acted surprised when he noticed the back of the neck of my new guitar in that it is Tiger maple is this rare or is the sales person pulling my leg? For an import this guitar plays and sounds great. I chose it over many other 12 strings that cost a great deal more.

Seed, first, Welcome to the OFC, second, congrats on the new O.

Ovation makes, IMHO, some of the finest 12'ers out there. I am sure that you will love it.

I am not that familiar with the Celebrity 12'ers, what is the model number?

A picture would be appreciated also. Someone may know the answer.

Enjoy!

Thank You for the warm welcome. The model number is CC245. I would like to add a photo but I haven't figured out how to do it in this forum yet. I'm not sure how large a file I can upload either.
This guitar is outstanding and has already exceeded all my expectations.

Welcome to the asylum Seed53…

Interesting photo… my 1598 MEII Adamas has similar striping on one side of the 2 piece walnut neck. It looks odd in that the "stripes" are not aligned with the grain, rather, they are at roughly the angle that your hand would be while playing…

In my case, (I bought it used,) the neck was so filthy when I got it, I didn't really notice the striping until I got it cleaned up quite a bit. I have been meaning to post pix to see if anyone knows if it was "natural" striping or just more embedded slime from the previous owner. (I have nearly taken the finish off the neck just getting it cleaned up, it was actually that bad, it had many areas with a black tarry goo that was pretty tough to remove, the stickiness is gone, so she plays great, but the neck still looks less than pristine to me.)

Anyway, is yours a brand-new guitar? Has anyone else seen that type of striping?

I've seen a few instances on celebs of "added" features to the wood, like a darker stain or such. I would find it hard to accept the figuring changing directions right at the headstock. Also, looks a little dark to me to be maple. Nice look to it though, and WELCOME.

I agree, it doesn't look like maple. Maple isn't the only species of wood that shows unusual figuring, mahogany and it's relatives can too. The change of grain direction is due to the neck construction method. The neck & headstock are separate units from the same piece of timber. You can see the joint between the 1st and 12th tuners. The heel is a separate piece too. This type of neck construction uses wood ecomomically and cuts down on waste. It's usually only used on less expensive instruments, except for Taylor, who use a separate heel and scarf-jointed headstock for their necks

Cool figuring, but I agree it doesn't look at all like maple. Besides, I thought all Celeb necks were made from Nato (Mora sp.), sometimes called Eastern Mahogany. As Paul says, lots of trees can show that "tiger" figuring, sometimes called "flame" or "quilted" depending on the species and the intensity of patterning. I've had some pretty strongly figured walnut in the past that I made into jewelry boxes and humidors that was stunning.

Very pretty neck, lucky find.

The "UpLoading Photos" instructions are really obsolete... though they still contain some useful info... posting thru the Members gallery is no longer possible.

Martin used a separate headstock and neck grafted together.

For greater break angles a scarfed headstock joint is stronger than a one piece.

As a wood worker, I certainly understand their logic. But that Taylor finger joint always reminds me of the jointed scrap stock moldings you see at home centers.
Just looks cheap to my eye.
Sorry to go off topic...

Jonmark, I agree. Reminds me of the baseboards that they make for paint instead of stain. :D

Time to answer a few questions. The guitar is brand new. I watch the Guitar Center person open the original packing carton. All the shims are in place on the tuners. Also I'm not sure what the wood is either, but this is the way the guitar was shipped from ovation. I guess my last comment is from everybodies response its unique and a great gift from my wife, and it plays and sounds as great as it looks. Thank you for all the comments.
