I get remarks about mine: I sit back, guitar top tilted up 45%: I like to see the fretboard (a footstool for stability). Jeff Burns sort of "curls" over his axe, guitar top straight up and down. Feet flat on the floor.

What's yours? Does it work?

PS: I absolutely MUST use a strap. Jeff hates 'em, never uses one. Go figure. If you click on "website" in my sig you get a full photo of what I'm talkin' about.

Only use a strap when I'm standing. Fretboard always perpendicular with the ground, sitting or standing.

I'm with Miles. Face of the guitar perpendicular to the ground whether seated or standing. I think the guitar projects better if it's pointed at the listener. But that's just me.

I like having the neck raised to 45 degrees when standing or sitting as in classical style because it is much easier to work the whole fretboard. On the other hand, it isn't always practical in the sitting position unless you have a way to raise your left knee (using the rung of a stool or a classical foot rest). I also frequently revert back to a lot of old bad habits, so it comes down to what feels right for the playing circumstances. Oh yeah ... I guess whether you are playing fingerstyle or strumming makes a big difference. In the case of strumming, you almost HAVE to do the "perpendicular to the ground" thing if you are going to town on her.

I'm in the "Miles" camp...
though I'm not opposed to kicking back on the couch and plucking on the guitar at some angle greater than 90'

Same here Greg. I try to go for the perpendicular orientation, but usually end up with the guitar facing up at somewhat less than a 45 degree angle.

90° for me as well. Depending on the seating I may have to hunch forward to accomplish it.

90 for me as well, except like JW says: slouching on the couch. I tried the 45 deg like you said but found it hard on the wrist, however the guitar sounds alot brighter...

Same as Dave and Miles. Performing with the band, I'm always standing, with strap, most guitars with face perpindicular to the floor, deep bowls tilt up slightly. Solo shows, seated on a stool, with strap, no change in the guitar. Practicing in the bandroom, usually on a stool, no strap.

When sitting I'm in the Miles camp. Incidently, I like to use a stool that's 17 inches tall.

When standing the guitar is in more of a "classical / mariachi" position.

Guitar face parallel to the back of the lazyboy (me and the chair). Face forward enough to see the TV and reach the beer.

I try to keep it in the "Miles Position" (is that gonna be a new meme?), but the git winds up angling upwards slightly.

I'm assuming that the wife sits to the left of you so that if she complains about the noise all you have to do is turn slightly to the left? ;)

Have you ever been really sick, laid in bed flat on your back and played? It's not bad with a flatback, but an Ovation gets kinda squirrely.

Otherwise I try not to think about it. It's like golf, the more you think, the more you suck.

I'm in the basement and she's upstairs. Her left ear is the deaf one, but she's heard me occasionally out of her right ear.
I'd put a refrigerator down there, but then I wouldn't get any exercise coming upstairs for more beer.

I took sat in with an instructor in December a few times. He insisted on the clasical position, left leg un the classical stool with the neck high in between the legs.
It wasn't comfortable to me, at least with an Ovation. I had to start wearing a strap.
Still when at home I usually sit in an afjustable office chair, I find myself leaning back semi reclining, guitar rotates back slightly.
I find I really like it on the right leg, like miles as its the way I've done it forever.

Ain't THAT the truth. My best rounds are when I don't even keep score.

Al had, and probably still has, these simple adjustable foot rests. On a regular chair that would elevate your leg high enough that it wouldn't slope toward the ground. A couple of books would do the same thing, but the footrest is one of those simple, sturdy gizmos that I just think is cool to have. It doesn't work well when I tilt the lazyboy back, though.
The stools I have both have footrests at the right height for me.

I cross my legs... right ankle on left knee.

[That's helpful, huh? ]

Sitting, in an old, oak, lawyer's-style, swivwel chair, sans armrests, with my right foot on one of the swivel casters, to raise my knee. Typically, leaning back in the chair. Yeah, I still suck, but nobody comes near, anyway.

I usually cross my right knee over my left one to elevate the guitar. But my posture is terrible! I hunch over the guitar, and when I had to have an x-ray on my spine a few years ago the doctor LAUGHED!! Then he apologised for laughing at my pain, but he said he'd never seen such a crooked spine in his life. I saw the x-ray, and my spine is permanently in the shape my back assumes when I'm playing. The doctor even agreed that hours of sitting like that every day could very well be the cause. SO...I recommend using a footstool, either under your right foot if you use the "Miles position", or under your left if you use the classical position. And DON'T hunch over the guitar. Keep your back straight, shoulders back, and Advil handy.

i learned from a classical player. I am most confortable with the neck on a 45 degree angle on my left leg. when I play with the guitar resting on the right leg I get super bad left hand technique like putting my thumb above the fingerboard etc.

those little foot rests work great and really do make it easier to play
