Location: Maine | I have been watching some Ovation models for sale at auction on ebay. Isn't it amazing that people will bid what the guitar costs full retail and pay another fifty bucks on top of that for shipping. If I were a retailer, I'd continuously list my stuff on ebay with a reserve. It seems to me that you'd be selling a unit a day with these idiots. |

Location: Scotland | Ebay is a law unto itself. When I first started in mail-order we used to sell these cheap and pretty nasty entry-level plywood dreadnoughts. Usually in every shippment we received a couple of them would have some minor transit damage, so we'd auction them on ebay starting at £1, stating they were slightly damaged, and including a picture of the problem. Every one without fail, sold for way over recommended retail, even though non-damaged examples were listed at the same time, at the standard price. |

I certainly would not lay it out here if I didn't know it to be a fact, and I'm not quite sure where you get off telling me what kind of experience, or lack of, that I have with ebay. Perhaps the stress of a down economy has impaired your skewed your judgment a bit. If you have read this thread, you will note that there is, in fact, testimony for someone who actually sold guitars on ebay and with the same result that I had originally pointed out. Calm down, Al. Put the gun on the table. |

As a BFLG Member, I see Ovations with cracked, splintered and ravaged tops that are sold as fixer-uppers commonly get sold for as much or more than a playable unit. You could almost make a profit by buying $50 units at yard sales, sitting on them, and then selling the wreckage on Fleabay.... |

Location: Maine | Thanks, Mitz. Nice to know not everyone thinks I'm full of Bull Shit. All anyone has to do is put "Ovation Guitars" in the search engine of ebay. Then, click on "Auction." From there, just watch the bidding on Celebrity models, for example. No, you don't need to be an "expert" on Ebay to see for yourself how crazy people are. The ending bid, plus shipping, will often be as much, or more, than what I, or anyone, would pay on Musician's Friend for the same model. In early November of last year, I was hospitalized with a life threatening infection. After surgery and a lengthy hospital stay, I was sent home to recover and deal with a host of painful aftereffects. The point is, All I have had to do is sit at this computer and spend way too much time on this board and ebay. Hence, I have become quite familiar with what Ovations are going for at auction on Ebay. I am Not full of BS, I do have a great deal of experience with ebay; as a buyer, as a seller, and as a lurker, and Mr. alpep, you owe me an apology for your very personal attack. Now, be a man and do the right thing. |

Demanding specific behaviour is a sure way to not get it. Sharing opinions, positive or negative, happens to bring disagreement from time to time.
Everybody's an expert in their own experiences but most of us know little about each other...

We invite Ovation fans here and get a bunch of kooks. Ebay invites the world and fuels their greed and gluttony. What kind of nuts can you expect to inhabit that place?
When I get outbid, Ebay sends me a message something like "What are you doing? Somebody outbid you! You don't want to be a loser, do you? Bid again now!!!" At least that's what it seems like. |

1. Many bidders are buying based on sight appeal and are clueless as to the item's actual value.
2. When ppeople bid, egos get involved, then it becomes a competition. Winner pays the bill.
3. A fool and his money are soon parted. (P.T. Barnum was right)

I agree that it is foolish to demand an apology from anyone. I stand corrected and accept that.
I also agree that sharing opinions will bring about disagreement, and there is nothing wrong with that when the opposing opinion is in generic form. What I do not agree with is when that disagreement is in the form of a personal attack. Whenever there is a disagreement, it is not acceptable to refer directly to the poster by the use of "You" followed by the insult. This topic started out as really very benign and certainly didn't warrant the response that it got from one particular poster. Others here have contributed their opinion is a very pragmatic and even handed way. The way it should be. Let us not shrink from those that would be rude, even bully. I certainly won't.
Now, I will shut up as you requested, but not before I compliment G8r and Patch on those popcorn boys. I don't care who you are, that's funny right there!!! |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I will add what I believe is a corollary to "Ebay is a law unto itself" in that looking from the 20,000 foot level... there is no marketing model that applies to ebay, yet all marketing models apply to ebay.
There is only one "rule" I have found. That rule being, "if you don't list it, no one will buy it." which morphed into "if you don't list it on ebay, you won't sell it on ebay."
I used to believe it was the first way I had it, but then people started asking for things I "might" have, and while most time if I have it I will list it for them to buy, sometimes they contact me outside of ebay, but because of a simIlar product that is listed...
So in reality... the rule is there are no rules. |

Location: ms | I had a friend list a Breedlove on ebay. He got it off the bay shipped for a little over $800.00. The same guitar was selling at guitar center for $700.00 and change. His son dropped it and cracked the neck just behind the nut. It was playable but you could feel and see the crack. He listed it for sale without showing the damage and didnot get one bit. He later listed it showing the crack and got $725.00 for it. Thats a true ebay story. |
