It was all new to me, but I did bring the Adamas and last night, went over to the gathering place where they have a large campfire, and started to play a few songs. A few singer a longers and just a few for background music. I even sang through "Rocky Raccoon" with no flying fruit coming my way. Anyway, about an hour and a half later, we had gathered about 30 people, all having a good time and even got a few complements. Hadn't played much for a month or so, so my fingers are in a world of hurt now. All worth it though. Here's a pic my bride took .....(yeah, that's the southern jam book)

Joined: August 2008 Posts: 121 Location: Maine | Let's see, It's February 16th in Bangor, Maine. I think I'll go out, build a campfire, bring the Ovation out and hammer out a few tunes. Not sure I could get through the entire song though. I think that I'd be about ten minutes into it when my fingers would freeze to the fret board. AND remember, don't touch the strings with your tongue. You might be frozen there awhile and folks would get the wrong idea. Congratulations Jim, on two counts; 1) for your first public performance and 2) for being smart enough to be in a place where you can be outside with a campfire and in short sleeves.

I did tell them that I am basically a drummer that dabbles in guitars.

He was ENTERTAINING. People loved to hear him play and they sang along. If people are having fun when you play, then you ARE good! Maybe not a virtuoso guitarist, but a good entertainer, and while we all have our own reasons for playing, I think bringing a smile to someone's face is perhaps the best reason.

A pretty good guitar teacher said something to me not long ago that I thought was pretty profound, "There are a lot more guitar critics than there are guitar players." Whether it's original or not, I don't know, but it sure makes a whole lot of sense to me. I have watched some YouTube video of our own OFC players that are certainly much more proficient as players than I am. Notice that I said, "proficient" not "better." Many people have achieved a level of technique that some of us haven't, or may never. That doesn't mean we don't sound just as good, but enjoy ourselves in our own style. So, JIm, I think that you have opened up an avenue for all of us that get such great pleasure from playing a song or two and that we should share the work we have done in the privacy of our homes with others in a public venue. Again, good going, and thanks for the inspiration for the rest of us to do it.
