Wise words from a wise man.

Back in 1976 the only way to buy a guitar was from a music store. I bought my first real guitar from a store after shopping around for the best price. It was a Guild G37. That was my only guitar for 26 years. I literally wore it out. when I was done with it, a neck re-set and fret job were needed. Sold it on eBay w/o regrets.

Thereafter, I've bought and sold a load of guitars on eBay. A couple of years ago though I bought a Schecter electric from the local Guitar Center at their Labor Day event.

I got 3 guitars from a store (2new and 1used) an the rest of them(4) from friends or adds.

The next one could be ordered from the factory! when I make up my mind for an OM or D Boucher guitar.

The last in store purchase was about 5 years ago with a Bass for my Daughter.

Between Ebay and this place I have done all of my shopping since.

Mostly for non-primary guitars now...I have a couple guitars that hang from the walls as part of the décor. They were in Daddy's so I grabbed 'em. Also, I found a gorgeous Gretsch (6117 -- plays like a dream -- apologies for the mention of the apostate guitar!) in Daddy's.

So, my answer is last Year (2008) AND the year before.

There are occasionally REAL finds in the brick and mortar world. For example, Daddy's now has a PRS (again, apologies for the non-O mention) electric that is just sweeter than sweet. Priced reasonably...no shame in buying that one. I have seen Ovations Collection's Editions and others... Some SWEEEEEEEET guitars. But definitely a one-in-a-thousand type of thing... Bottom line, most purchases are on-line or e-Bay.

Of the 25+ guitars I have owned over the years, there have been 3 I got from a music store. My parents bought me my first O, my 1112-4 1n '73 or '74. I bought my Flying V in '75. and I bought a Guild F45 back in '87.

Back in the day I used to buy guitars from garage sales or classifieds. I got my '65 Melody Maker for $30 at a garage sale. Very nice Fender Precision bass for around $100. These days, its OFC, Al, Ebay or craigs list. If I find something I like in a local big box music store, which is rare, I'll find it online or used cheaper.

As soon as I finish my coffee, get permission from SWMBO, and run a few errands, I'm going to go down to GC and buy a Hamer DuoTone. The coffee is getting cold while I work up to the second part of that plan.

I'm back! I didn't quite make it out of the store with a guitar. Put the DuoTone on layaway until we get word on how badly we'll be hit for taxes this year. Probably not so bad that I won't get it, but I might be looking for a buyer if the accountant gives us bad news. If that's the case, the Professor gets first dibbs.
"OK, I'm going to get some gas, wash the car and buy a guitar." Her hearing loss suddenly improves and she gives me the look and said I better wait to see if we'll have anything left after taxes. So if Uncle Sam doesn't get it all, GC will get the rest and I'll have a US made DuoTone.

Your GC has Hamers? We have 4 GC's in Atlanta. None of them has Hamers.

This was a used one that was in there for a long time. I mentioned it on this board and Prof was interested, but then it sold for $999. The guy that bought it traded it back on something else and the manager didn't want it hanging around forever like last time, so he sold it to me for his cost. It's got some pick scratches, belt buckle rash and a couple small dings, but the fretboard looks almost new.
I think the only other Hamers they have are the Asian ones or the Slammers. There are a couple of factory tours on Youtube or AOL video. Jol does a nice job of explaining their craft.

My girlfriend turned wife bought my first Celeb at a music store.
I bought my Celeb Deluxe at a music store, same company, different outlet.
I bought my Kramer at a flea market.
I traded a BB Gun for my Washburn Falcon at an auction house. Best deal of my life.
I bought the Fender accoustic/electric from a flea market.
Elite Special on Ebay
Fender Squire in a music store
and I am buying the C778 LX from Daddy's this week.

So I guess that I am all over the place. No particular favorite, when a good deal presents itself and I am in the market, I jump.

Last month. A very pretty Ibanez Artstar AS-80 that was a trade-in at GC. Came with a hard case, hang tags and other case candy. Guitar itself is a pretty orangy-blonde and appears absolutely unused. Not a fingerprint on it. It's probably 10ish years old.

It had been hanging in there for almost a year at $479, but was clearanced for $300 last month at one of their sales. An offer I couldn't refuse. Maybe that sounds like lot for a Korean made guit, but this thing is beautifully made, sounds great to me, has a very nice neck, and gets pretty favorable reviews at the usual places. Plus I've been in this Brian Setzer kick for awhile now and can't afford a Gibbie 335 or Gretsch Longhorn. LOL

So there you have it. The sordid truth is out. But if it makes anyone feel any better, the last guitar I bought at a music store before last month was my brand new - and very first - Ovation, a 1111-4, back in 1971.

Bought for myself was in 1980, acoustic, dark sunburst, 1158 Custom Legend 12-string.

Adopted from GC, 11/06, U681T that I sold a month later.
