So they've ditched the VIP? No complaints here. The more experience I have with the VIP5 and the rest of the Fishman modelling stuff, the less I like it.

I'd be fine with the VIP, if it didn't need a dummy plug to activate the tuner.

At the gig on Tuesday night Cliff's guitar sounded like crap until the VIP image was out completely. OK when the imaging was in it subjectively sounded more like a "miked" guitar, but in the mix it sounded thin, weak and gutless. As soon as the imaging was removed it started to work. OK, it was a piezo analog of a guitar sound, but it was a good piezo tone and what it may have slightly lacked in purist accuracy it made up for with presence and authority. Fishmans Aura technology might sound great at home, or in a reasonably predictable venue, or in the studio (why, if you have decent mics?) but it's not for me at a gig

And what do you use to beef the sound up? A pre amp? DI box? Thanks

My sound doesn't need "beefing up" It's big enough as it is. Currently I use a Bose T1 digital mixer into either our own PA or whatever the house provides. But in reality all that's needed is a good DI box and a well-EQ'd system with a engineer who knows what he's doing. And by "knows what he's doing" I mean he has the ability to follow a simple instruction like "leave it flat"

That's a great DI, I have 2, but I'd hold back awhile. They launched their new Venue DI at NAMM. It's a souped-up pedal version on the Para DI with an onboard tuner, 5-band EQ with 2 sweepable frequencies, feedback control, footswitchable level boost, balanced and unbalanced outs etc. Very very cool. In fact for me it was damn near the best thing I saw at the show (Except for the pre-production Goldtone Weissenborn Style 4 sample) The Venue DI should be in the UK by mid-year. Strings & Things and I think JHS distribute over here.
