Back in 2000 I bought an Ovation 1863 Classic guitar from Guitar Center of Lawndale, CA. Right after that I got married, and I put the guitar in my closet and played it about five times over the following 12 years. My wife and I split up last year, and I need to divest some of my things. So I'm interested in what you guys think this is worth.

It's in like new condition. Stored without a battery, so it's even pristine in the pre-amp. No dings, nicks or scratches, other than some extremely light brush marking where a strum would naturally wear a guitar. But you've got to have perfect lighting and look very hard to detect that. It's 9.999 out of 10.

From the original receipt:
The Guitar...
OVATION 1863-4 CLSC SS AE GTR NATURAL
SER: 544031
SKU: 9277155118
AMT: $1,071.80

The Case...
OVATION 8117 SUPER SHALLOW BODY GUITAR C
SKU: 1334817000
AMT: $95.25

The Strap...
LEVY'S MSS8-BLK GC 2" NYLON GUITAR STRAP
SKU: 3920970000
AMT: $7.36

It plays absolutely perfectly. The tone and harmonics are dead-on from one end of the neck to the other.

I haven't taken any pictures of it yet, but if there's interest I'll certainly do that when I get a chance.

Thanks!

The best info on what a guitar is worth for selling is in our FAQ...

Q: What is my Ovation guitar worth?
A: This is probably the most frequently asked question, and the hardest to answer. Worth is very subjective and changes rapidly with fickle markets. What something ultimately is worth is a combination of what one person is willing to pay versus what another person is willing to accept. Many factors, not the least of which is the actual condition of the guitar, will affect the selling price. There are so many other factors involved in pricing a musical instrument. Is is collectable? Is it rare? Is it popular?

The best way to get an idea of what your guitar might sell for is to use the "Completed Auctions" feature of eBay Search to see what similar models have sold for recently. Other online resources include www.gbase.com and www.guitarlist.com. Your best bet, unless you need it appraised for insurance or other reasons, is to try and ask yourself "How much is this instrument worth to me?" More value related resources include the "The Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars" and "The Blue Book of Electric Guitars" both edited by S. P. Fjestad and available in paperback by Gurney Brown. There is also the software version "The S-Book of Guitars" by S. P. Fjestad. Click here to connect to Blue Book Publishing, Inc.

Thanks for the tips. I did lots of searching before coming here, and was disappointed with my results. Not a single Ovation 1863 on Ebay. None on Craigslist (in my half of California anyway. None on qbase.com, and it looks like guitarlist.com has an expired domain or something.

My local Guitar Center (Visalia, CA) is going to do some research for me and make me an offer, since I have their original receipt. But they had a heck of a time locating info about it either. Seems to have more hits in Japan than in the states on this guitar.

They were wondering what I'd take for it, and asked if I'd be happy with $500, but I didn't bite. Will see what they come up with after they do some research.

By the way, Welcome... I've upgraded your membership to allow you to post in the general section.

It is really weird how they seem to be not for sale anywhere... I did find this..

I got a little nosey and looked it up in Terapeak.. Two have sold so far this year on eBay. One in February for $637 and another in April for $523 so their offer wasn't too far off for a store offer.

I'll have to see what they offer. I don't think I'd sell for $500 since I paid them over $1100 for the guitar & case together. I'd take $750 I think, for the guitar & the case, which is also in like-new condition.
