Answer: Because we have to!

Start with an idea, concept or a problem - such as should I play this song on the six or the twelve?

Collect parts and use chalk drawings.

Bring it to life.

And don't stop trying... even if it takes years!

Probably it's the challenge of bringing something to life. Either resurrecting a vintage piece, or going-off-the-deep-end, with an innovative design. Some of our numbers (Yours Truly) are compromised in musical talent & dexterity, and the goal is to produce a fine & well-crafted instrument for those with more "gifts".
Those critters are now, literally, emigrated to talented hands around the world.
That's essentially the mission in this baliwick.
We can talk technical stuff, later......
Thanks for starting this forum, Mike!

Yes, Great idea Mike. I'll post a few pics of a couple of projects very soon. One I'm working on right now is a totally renovated Thunderbolt. Its been a long winded project but it is almost done. Certainly learned what a bitch those bowl backs are to work on and I've got an old Legend in similar condition (no top) yet to do. So if anyone has any good ideas for working on bowl bodies - cradles, moulds etc - I'd love to hear and see some pics of your approach. Another issue I had was while re-binding the top I rubbed off the textured finish from the bowl - how can you not?

The best "Bowl Finish" technique I've found so far is to hold the spray can about four feet away while shooting...

OK, here goes with a few pics of the Thunderbolt project. These are early on. I'll have to get some more recent ones off the camera later.
First is how it was out of the factory then how I received it and the top construction series. Will get to the neck in another post.

Yes!
But maybe we should try using separate threads!

Probably a good suggestion, Mike.
Nice work, Wizz!
As to a cradle for the bowl, I use a cardboard box, with a reduced outline of the bowl shape, so the rim sticks up about 1-1/2" above the box. Then, I have several little bags of lead shot I put in the bowl to stabilize the movement in the cradle. Seems to work pretty well, especially when I'm routing the binding channels.
In the true spirit of the BFLG.....dirt cheap!

That way in ten or so years when someone searches the archives to see what those old guys were doing...

I've got it strung with electric strings and the Necks are now set and intoned more betterer. Going with the GHS Model A137 Microphone setup.
