I recently bought an early 70's brown Ovation case with a missing handle.

Anyone know of a replacement handle that fits best? I've looked on ebay for replacements, but before I buy one I thought I'd try to get advice here first. I know it's a common problem for those cases.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

I know this is not exactly rocket science , but I figured out how to replace the handle on my early 70's case.

1. Carefully peel back plush interior behind handle.
2. Remove old handle and use a Dremel to grind out rivets.
3. Remove old black "tape" accent under handle.
4. Install new "tape" accent with black duct tape or Gorilla tape ( I added extra adhesive).
5. Install new handle with #6 1/2" sheet metal screws.
6. Re-glue interior.

Normally, I'm not sure sheet metal screws would work, but there is enough metal in these cases to get a good connection. If I had to used rivets, I would have had to tear the interior up big time.

Cool. What's backing the pointy end of the screws besides the cloth? That would make me a little nervous

I would use a pop-rivet from the outside, or screws with washers and nuts. If using sheetmetal screws, I'd add some locktite on them. Also, if using sheet metal screws, locktite-putty or steelmagic putty (small grey putty stick with a black core) would be great to sneak in on the inside. Not only will it cover the pointy end, but it will also act as a backing washer and even if the threads let go, the screw will not come out.

If you use 1/4" or 1/2" screws, the end does not come through far enough to affect the guitar, it still has enough padding, at least on my case.

Good idea on the lock-tite, I'll add it.

Thanks

http://www.ohiotravelbag.com/FlipBook/P212_BOOK_1.indb/index.html#/... If the hinges are still on the case the L-1166 worked for my 1117 case after the handle broke ..... did not have to do anything but snap it in to place.... but everything was intact except for the broken handle

I have a '71 Ovation Balladeer that I bought new in February of 1971. The handle broke about a month later. I went to the local music store and bought a small, hard rubber amp handle with threaded metal covers on each end. The screws went right into the screw holes where the original handle was and tightened down beautifully. It was a less-than-five-minute fix.

That handle is still there today...
