Hi All
Hope you're all very well. I've been lurking for a while, not much to say lately :-))

Anyone know if "usb mics" are any good? I've started to make one or two videos, and they sound rubbish. All I have is a mobile phone...so no surprise they sound rubbish.....so I've been told to look at usb condenser mic and record with some software, so I can at least put bit of reverb or whatever...does this make sense?

Anybody do this kind of thing? I'm totally lost with it all

Thanks!

USB mics are ok but a better (albeit more expensive solution) if you want to go USB would be to get a true condenser mic and something like the BLUE ICICLE. They run about $50 and give you nice versatility from the standpoint of being able to do what you are currently doing with the USB but also give you the benefits of a condenser mic if you move towards that route down the road.

Decent condenser mic would run about $100 so total package would be around $150.

A "good" USB condenser is gonna run you about the same but you can get cheaper versions for around $60-80.

Of course you can spend several hundred with either of the above options if you want to get better quality.

Thanks Stephen, I've just had a hunt around for that "Blue Icicle", it says it can be used with any mic.....so now I'm off to read around the internets about why i need a "condenser" ...and why my Shure SM58 wouldn't do the same job....all I want to do is record myself with a guitar singing songs :-)) Not interested in building some big home studio....YET!!!! Oh *** that'll be the next project I can see it now.....

Your SM58 will work just fine with the Icicle.

The SM58 is a Dynamic mic so it is more for "live" performances but with something like the "Icicle" it will work well and sound much better than the built in computer mic or mobile phone.

My son uses an Icicle with a Shure SM57 and I think it sounds pretty darn good.

Well, I don't record with USB but I would assume that with some of the simpler DAWs you just plug into the USB port and start recording.

Maybe someone can jump in and be more helpfu
.....but I would think an audio interface would not be a requirement .
