In the thread regarding 1960's catalogs it is stated that the Deluxe Balladeer had neck binding. Although there do exist some DB's with neck binding, this is far from the norm.

The original 1966 - 1968 shiny bowl Deluxe Balladeers did not have binding on the neck. Some of the last run of Deluxe's in 1969, possibly early 1970, did had neck binding. However, after approximately serial # B- 500 the rosette was not inlaid, the bowl was textured and the bridge was walnut.

Therefore, taking into account the remote possibility of exceptions, any factory original Deluxe Balladeers with neck binding will also have textured bowls, non-inlaid rosettes and walnut bridges, while maintaining the gold "Deluxe Balladeer" decal on the headstock.

These DB's are very rare and are transitional models between the Deluxe Balladeer that was phased out in late 1969 or early 1970, the K-1117 that did not have a name designation in 1971, and the K-1117 Legend that first appeared in 1972.

Since I did not take dwgpreacher up on his offer to trade me back the 40th anniv Balladeer reissue for the cracked top Elite I received, I'm still interested in acquiring another shiny bowl model. I gather these don't become available very often? What are my chances of realistically coming across one of these any time soon? Talking about an original, not a repop.

I should have specified 1117 in my rebuttal to Moody. It is indeed a 'transitional' 1117 (there's no 'k' on the label) I was speaking to. Here's the label:

Dave if you are looking for a K1111RI try a WTB in the for sale section. I picked one up here several months ago and at that time there was more than one available.

Note regarding the label shown here; the zip code for New Hartford is 06057 not 06082...funny.

This may sound stupid for as long as I've been around here but what exactly is meant by "Neck Binding"?
Are you guys talking about the white strips down the sides of the fretboard?

Thanks Damon.
Didn't the GC DB's have that too? (I can't remember what year they started making those...)

Yes. GCDB had an ivoroid bound neck.

Good stuff Bob. You don't say much, but when you do it's always a good read.
Thanks!
