I usually don't have any problems selecting strings for myself, as I usually buy EXP Phospher Bronze Lights for my guitars. ...BUT.... I have a 10-yr-old that I have been giving free lessons to that has a baby taylor. He is a special kid, in that he spends ALL of his free time practicing, and he learns very quickly. Because he plays so much, Every week I see him his strings are already going flat. I don't have any experience buying strings for a small guitar like that, so I don't know what to recommend. I just think he needs something that will last longer, without putting his parents in the poor house. Any suggestions???

I find the Adamas Silk and Steel strings last a long time without noticable deterioration. I use them on my 08C pretty much all the time.

OK... So how are Elixers different from D'Adarrio coated EXPs? I've used both, and to me the EXPs seemed to keep their tone longer.

They're not different.

Your post didn't mention that you'd tried Elixers. If the EXPs last longer than Elixers, then it looks like you've already run out if options, other than going up a gauge.

Seems VERY strange that they're going "flat" after only a week tho'.

When I was a kid just learning, I think I had the same set of strings for 3 years straight

My LAV Koa just spent five years in a case with the same set of strings on and sounds fine.

Buy him a bottle of string cleaner and see if it helps with string life.

Hmmm???... I always wondered if using metal polish on strings would extend their life. I think it would be fine on regular, non-coated strings, but it may screw up coated strings. Great idea though, for someone who cannot afford to change strings frequently.

If you explain to him that he should was his hands thoroughly before playing the guitar and wipe down the strings after he is finished. This habit will help extend the string life considerably.

Nice suggestion...Thanks. I ended up throwing on a set of EXP 16s and they sounded great. His mom told me the guitar shop was charging her 20 bucks to put a set of strings on it. Every time I saw the guitar I noticed the fretboard was dry and dirty, and the top was also dried up and wearing. So I took his guitar for the night, cleaned and oiled the fretboard, wiped down the mahogany top with a very light coat of oil also to fill the scratches, and put the strings on it. That night his mom emailed me and said he couldn't wait to get at the guitar and check out his new strings. When he saw the guitar he commented to his mom that it looked like a brand new guitar (: Now... when he gets old enough to move to a larger instrument, I'm gonna talk his parents into a USA Ovation.
