Location: Yorkshire, England | Hi everyone, please excuse my lack of knowledge regarding this, but I wondered if anyone out there could help?
I've just purchased a 1990 Ovation Elite that looks as though it has hardly been played at all.
At the bottom of the R/H epulettes is a shaped piece of clear protective film, obviously there to protect from pick wear.
Not having seen this on any other Ovations, my question is, should it be left on or removed?

Also, how difficult would it be to remove? You sure don't want to damage the finish. |

Location: Yorkshire, England | Believe it or not, that's just what I've done - a bit of gentle heat, and it peeled off ok. All it was, was a piece of sticky backed plastic. On close examination you could tell that it wasn't meant to be there, so it had to go. The finish has come up as good as new with a bit of furniture polish. Thanks for your help !

In my case the application of heat worked fine, the material was so well applied that I didn't know if was meant to be there or not, but I was more worried about the plastics' affect on the finish. |

Location: Portland, OR | I do on my N768 Elite and I think it may be more than just plastic, altho' it might be. I'm afraid there might be some adhesive that will eventually damage the finish. So, I asked because I figured perhaps someone else had had a different experience. |

Location: Yorkshire, England | Well, my Elite (1868) was from 1990 and the plastic was, what we call over here, Fablon - (you may know it as something else) It was a medium thickness clear sticky-backed plastic material that you might use for covering a notice, or a book perhaps. Although the guitar looked as though it hadn't been played in all that time, this covering looked as though it may have been on quite a while.
I was also concerned about the possible ageing effect on the finish, had the wood which had not been covered reacted differently over time to the part that had?
I can only relate my own experience, but with a decent bit of furniture polish after the removal of the plastic, you just can't tell it's been on at all.
If you feel tempted to remove whatever's on yours, I appreciate it must be a bit of a problem for you. The finish on my Elite is gloss, which I'm not sure may have helped the removal. |

Location: ranson,wva | if tehre is residue you can cut it with some lighter fluid. it wont hurt the top finish. |

Location: Yorkshire, England | There was a bit of sticky adhesive residue remaining when the plastic came off, but the polish removed it completely.
Never used, or would indeed have thought of using lighter fuel.
I'd be careful with it, but of course will conceed to previous experience if Jason has used it before.
Sligoman - what else could it be other than plastic? |
