Location: Always beautiful canyon country of Utah | OK OK I know this is old stuff and very elementary to many of you out there. But I have forgotten which strings are "brighter" -- phosphor bronze or 80/20? Or are there other strings which are brighter yet? Are there huge differences between different brands of PBs? There was a wonderful thread on here about this topic around Jan of 2013 but I am unable to locate it. Maybe I am just accustomed to the bright clear sound of my Adamas but my Elite 1537 sounds "dusky" in comparison. I realize this is due to the wood top and perhaps that is the desired effect and I should not try to change it. Any input will be welcome and I am sorry if this is a repeat on what has already been discussed at length here. If anyone else can locate that thread that would be appreciated also. This club remains an amazing source of information for all of us with interest in these topics! |

I think that 80/20 are maybe brighter.
The box sez "Deep, Bright and Projecting Tone"
Whereas EXP16 Phosphor Bronze sez "Warm, Bright and Balanced Tone"
I do find that 80/20 sound clean and clear to me, so...

Location: Utah | I have found 80/20 to have a brassy sound. It isn't simply brighter, it is also much more metallic to my ear.
Different brands do have different tones within Phosphor Bronze. Personally that is where I would stay, though tone is obviously a very subjective personal thing. The plain strings really should sound the same regardless of 80/20 or phos-bnz.
There are different cores to the strings, round and hex. They have a slightly different tone and stiffness.
I've only played one 1537 and made the mistake of not buying it on the spot. By the next day it was gone. Anyhow my recollection was that it had a very woody tone compared to my LX O's, and similar to my 1976 Patriot (deep bowl), but I would not call it dull or dark at all. The 2 brands of strings I would try would be Adamas 1818E and Martin SP lights (.012). Both work very well on the Patriot.
There are a few in between composition strings which are 90/10. In theory they would be brighter than phos-bnz but not as bright as 80/20. |

| I always thought Phospher projected better... 80/20's sounded more percussive with less chord sounding... maybe it's just my guitars. |

That video should come with some kind of warning, maybe like the one they use before Sons of Anarchy.
Anyways, strings, strings and strings. I have never liked "bright" strings. I use PB 80/20 lights. I have always be told to try a bunch of different brands. I let friends play my guitar and I listen for the sound I am looking for. Of course than you also have to remember that every guitar sounds different on different guitars. I would guess that every string salesman in the world gets a kick back from d'addario, as they always try to sell them first.
