I have a pristine Adamas 1688-8 that I have had for a few years. Someone on this Board has contacted me about selling it.

I have been thinning the herd lately and it may be time to let this one go. My problem is that I have no idea of the going price for this model. Can you help me with the appropriate range of value for this guitar? Thank you. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Tom

There is always the distress sale due to health, etc. However, I would estimate the value (prior to the Fender announcement) at $3.300-3,900 or more. My 1688-8 came out of the custom shop (OP-50) in 2005 and is also pristine. Had recent interest concerning but I am now reconsidering as I may never be able to replace it. I play it a lot more than my Martin D45-12. There are a lot of guitars out there but, as in the case of the 1688 and D45-12, few are for sale.

And the label indicates it's # 86 of the series.

While 3K-3.8K sounds really good, I think in the current market somewhere around 2.8K-3K is more realistic.

If I could afford an Adamas, a 1688 would definitely be on top of the list. Search of the OFC shows many sold and traded, with quite a few considerably below 2K, though I assume those were older and not mint but interesting in terms of affordability.

As I mentioned earlier, I have never even seen an Adamas other than in pictures. It seems they were never produced in large enough numbers to make their way into the smaller stores across the countries. For some reason, numbers were kept low and prices kept high so awareness and access have been very limited. Not sure if this was intentional marketing or an accidental engineering limitation.

Doubt if a 1688 will be sold at less than ? $3,300 in the future unless it was a distress sale or prior damage. Even if the custom shop was still available, it took six months to make my year 2005 and I would expect it would be at least $5,000. I agree with Beal and others that this is the finest 12-str you can find. As to those of us who have one, if we sell it, we may never be able to get another.

Adamas textured top guitar has additional costs that place it higher than the Ovation models. The original slotheads that were made were found to be too expensive to be produced as a product line. Usually someone works up from an Ovation to an Adamas. Small stores (and even big stores) usually did not carry the top of the line US Ovation such as the Custom Legend or Elite. What I found is that they carried the lower level US models or off-shore Celebs. Their customers are interested in entry level guitars, straps, cases, music books, etc. Combined with lessons, good profit margin for the store.

Why does a player take the truss rod cover off his Ric when playing? He has to keep adjusting the neck.

Whether a 1688 or a 1687, either get familiar with an OFC'er that has one, go to a regional get together, or do what I did for my 1st one - take advice from others, then (with good disclosure) buy it without even getting the chance to play it...you will be blown away by it. In fact, all of my textered top Adamas - bought them without playing it first I have the 1688, several 1687's. had the UTE, 47RI, several reissues, and the special #50 of the original slotheads.

If and when you are ready, remember Al (LostArtVintage) was THE #1 ADAMAS DEALER and has, at least for awhile, an inventory of Adamas and Ovation.

As to Adamas SMT and CVT models, I had some which I sold keeping only the Millennium...not sure if I kept it as my wife thinks it is pretty, a harpsichordic effect, or that it has Pluto as a planet. Amyway, looks great in the living room even if not played that much.

The fretboard on this one just looks weird, and how could they damage the bowl like that:

And the label indicates it's # 86 of the series.

Tom

The 86 is probabbly the frequency of the top, not the number of it in the series.......

As to frequency, probably average is 93. When I discussed a 101 1687, Kim expressed surprise and said something about they didn't let one that high out of the factory. Yet, it is balanced, Adamas sound, etc., although it has a slight brightness my others don't. Maybe it really doesn't matter if it is an 86 or higher. Heck, even strings can affect the sound on a guitar. For me, maybe I don't have to restring it as often :}

Textured refers to the fact that it doesn't have a thick coating of lacquer (polyester, whatever) over the carbon fibre. Woven tops are where the fibres are literally woven. A W597 is woven, but not textured (except for the special ones Al was selling) whereas the 1680 and 2080 were woven, textured tops.

Not all but some textured tops were the primary Adamas I and the Adamas II series. The UTE was a textured top. Several well respected individuals had told me to buy a textured top. They were right even though more expensive than the CVT and SMT models. Please understand, the CVT and SMT are great guitars. It is just IMHO the textured top is the true Adamas. I have had a couple of the CVT and SMT's but sold them except the CVT Millennium.
