Do any of you use an iPad mini to display lyric and tab sheets when you play live? If so, what are some of the best / most user friendly apps out there? Or do you make your own sheets, and if so, how do you do it? What do you use? I’d like to try to go paperless. ![]() Thanks!

I wish I could have my fifty or so songs firmly seated in my brain all neatly filed and de-fragged for immediate recall. But that's just not gonna happen. I have maybe 25 songs that are just muscle memory but the rest, especially in a performance situation, might develop a hitch or two. For some songs I like to be able to briefly glance down & get my bearings before I dive in. If I get distracted or confused I can look down just to get on track again. I would never just keep my eyes fixed on the page. I feel that if a song is that unpolished... leave it at home. . I imagine the guys that gig part time for full time, and get money for it, have some pretty thick songbooks.

ForScore is an iPad-only app, it won't run on an iPhone.: http://www.forscoreapp.com Edited by standing 2014-06-04 7:58 AM

Are you saying that only your set list is on your iPad, but the actual sheet music/tabs/lyrics/chord charts (whatever) are not stored locally on the iPad? Are you retrieving them from DropBox or some other cloud-based storage? I keep a copy of all of my songs/tabs/lyrics, etc. as PDF files on my computer, I regularly sync them all with ForScore on my iPad, then I use ForScore to view/play them, create set-lists, etc. on the iPad. I don't need Wi-Fi while playing, since the actual files are already stored on the iPad. I'm going to check OnSong also to see how it compares to ForScore, but so far, ForScore has worked fairly well for me. (ymmv…) -standing-

I think the Docs2Go app needs WiFi connection, which I didn't realize til we were setting up for a gig. I'm running around up and down the block outside like an idiot trying to find an open network. Always pays to have a backup hard copy binder! How would I store these things locally? I was under the impression that iPads have no local memory. I should probably just ask my 4 year old... ![]()

I should probably just ask my 4 year old... ![]() I assume you mean Docs2Go on your computer uses Wi-Fi to sync/send files to your iPad, and you had no access to WI-Fi to move songs from your computer onto your iPad? If that's the case, in the future you may be able to connect the iPad to the computer with a USB cable and transfer songs directly, via iTunes, bypassing Wi-Fi altogether. But, obviously you should test it out at home in advance to be sure you can make it work properly. However, if you were trying to transfer files from someone else's computer to your iPad, it gets a little more complicated. Probably the easiest method is to have them email them to you as attachments. If you have a Wi-Fi-only iPad, then you would need access to Wi-Fi to get the email, so you would probably have to plan ahead. Current models of iPads are available with between 16-128 GB of internal memory. I have over a thousand B&W (mostly-text-only) PDF files on my iPad, they only take up around 200 MB (roughly 1/5 Gigabyte) As long as the files are created properly and not loaded with large graphics or something, you should be able to store plenty of songs/tabs/charts directly on your iPad. (But make sure you have backups somewhere else, of course!) BTW: Don't tell your 4 year old you were you were running around outside trying to get Wi-Fi! If you are very careful, they may reach 7 or 8 before they decide that they are smarter than you! From that point on… good luck!

This is something that OnSong has struggled to make work and user frustration is well documented in the 'Get Satsfaction' OnSong forum. When they sort it out l'll probably give OnSong another go, but for now SongBook gets the nod. There are some pretty cool features promised for OnSong 2.0, but it's been 'coming' for well over a year now. SongBook has always been better for in-app editing, but it seems like OnSong has improved this aspect and now follows a very similar workflow. I don't need a page flipper because I set it to scroll at the right speed. Takes a few goes to get it right, but once you've set it up, it's bulletproof. OnSong also has the scrolling option. The one thing I ALWAYS mess up though, whether using SongBook OR OnSong, is forgetting to press 'play' to start the lyrics scrolling and not realising until I'm well into the song. BTW, ChordPro SongBook already has an Android version out, but OnSong is working on it - like they are with OnSong 2.0. Edited by muzzlitebeer 2014-06-07 2:55 AM
