I've been looking at a 1867 here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ovation-Legend-1867-Electro-Acoustic-Guitar-S... it doesn't appear in the Ovation 2008 catalogue (not many shallow bowls do!) Is this just an oversight?
Are shallow bowls losing favour?
I've also seen someone offering a 1869
Any comments 1867 v 1869 very welcome |

| 1867 & 1869 are essentially the same guitar - same grade top, same bracing, same neck. The difference is the 1869 has the "Custom" bling upgrades - different style & bound fretboard, mother-of-pearl inlaid fret markers, headstock logo & purfling, and mother-of-pearl rosette. Basically, the 1867 is the corn-fed girl-next-door, and the 1869 is the same girl dressed up to the nines for a night out in the big city. The shallow bowls don't have the volume or projection of the deep bowls, but that's not an issue if you're playing plugged in. |

Location: SoCal | From my info, 1867 has a AA spruce top v. 1869 Custom Legend with AAA. That is probably the primary difference as both have the ebony fretboard.
Other, bling as previously posted and bridge (walnut on 1867 and ebony on 1869). This would not any or much difference in playability or voice.
Number of comments in the past as to difference between Ovation's grading of AAA v. AA. Some discount the difference, some like myself make a specific destinction (particularly when played as an acoustic). In a mid or shallow bowl, major acoustic difference in bracing and AA v. AAA (i.e., '84 Collectors with AAA).
So, depends on price range for the two models and your budget. Both great guitars. |

Location: Scotland | Some cynics consider grading of tops as nothing but a way to charge more for the guitar. Often the differences between A, double A and triple A are entirely cosmetic, and their contribution to any audible difference would be pretty much unquantifiable. Some of the best sounding vintage guitars I've ever heard have tops that would not have qualified as A-grade. |
