Sitting here in enjoying this kids work on the "Austin City Limits" tonight. This guy has that whole Dave Mathews kinda delivery, its progressive, its blues, its jazz, its like nothing else.... just great stuff!
I hear Dave's style in the off meter vocals and Sting style big time and his own cool style all mixed in. Very enjoyable.
Had no idea he was this versatile.

You get the chance to catch this guy, do it.

He's much better than his top 10 pop hits would indicate. Saw that ASL a couple of weeks ago. Mayer also has a good performance on the Eric Clapton benefit concert that aired last November(?) and will probably air again the next time your local PBS station begs for money. Mayer's got some chops, for sure.

Saw Mayer at the Gorge last year. He was pretty good, but so were the 2 other guys on stage with him.

Nothing too special though. If he weren't so purdy, he'd just be another good guitar player hanging out online in some forum... Oh ouch, that hurts.

Now Dave Matthews. Wow. We go see him every year at the Gorge and camp out to see all 3 shows (Labor Day weekend every year). He rarely repeats a song over the weekend, the setlist changes every night. It's always the highlight of the concert season for me. And we're in row 5. Hard show to beat.

Too bad Dave plays them damned Taylors.

BTW, check out Village Sessions from Mayer. I like those versions better than the stuff on Continuum.

I saw Mayer 2 summers ago with Sheryl Crow. Both of them were great. I've been a fan of his since I first heard "No Such Thing". Matthews is a very talented guy with an amazing band, but I can only take his vocals in small doses.

True... gotta hear the live cuts to hear what he can do. Can't stand most of his studio work, but I have all his live work (published and otherwise) and he rips up the blues.

If you're a bit torrent guy, check out his old bar room sessions from 2000 - 2003. Some great acoustic work. (Sucker)

My fav acoustic ever...

You'll thank me.

A good player for sure, went to BerkLee in Boston as I recall. Did the pop thing to get some bucks and now is focusing on the music.

Isn't that pretty much the prerequisite? Show you can sell some records THEN, and ONLY then, can you look outside the box. There's probably only a few real artists that have beaten that rule.

I was born during that whole summer of love thing, and in the SF area to boot.

Probably had some hippie rub off. Must be why I like DMB shows better.

Announced today that Sheryl Crow and John Mayer are supporting Clapton in June at his first Hyde Park gig for 10 years. There will be 100,000 tickets.

Check out some of the John Mayer Trio Live! stuff he did w/Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino. It's sensational, especially his Hendrix cover. The boy can play, no doubt about it. He has such a great feel for letting his guitar work breathe within the context of his songs.
