I just bought a mint 1992 Custom Legend 1869. The action at the 12th fret is about 6/32 of an inch - a little higher than I like. There are no shims beneath the pickup and it's got 11-gauge strings on it. My local luthier, who is a very reputable guy, says he thinks the neck angle is a little extreme. A slight truss rod adjustment produced no appreciable improvement. He won't take the epoxied neck off, so now I'm wondering, does this sound like a job for the Mother Ship? Any other suggestions?
I LOVE the guitar, but it's just not comfortable and I don't want it to end up not getting played as much as it deserves to be played.
Thanks much! |

| if you don't have a local that's familiar with or Ovation certified... the factory is the way to go.
send John B at the mothership an e-mail.
neck reset is around 200 plus shipping and any additional fretwork etc.. ymmv.. but I have had a couple done.
and if there are no major cosmetic issues it will come back looking like new and playing like new. they do spectacular work.
a custom legend is worth the trip.

Location: Baltimore, MD | Thanks, Glenn. I had them replace a neck on an 1869 several years ago and it came back better than I could ever have expected. Do you have an Email address for John B.? |

| 1869Picker - welcome to the board from another 1869 owner. I just sent you a private message (what we call a PM 'round here). |

Location: North Carolina | Don't know what it is, but I love the 1869. Bought it in '95 because I needed a plug-n-play acoustic for two songs when I was in a rock band, and it's become the guitar I can't seem to put down. No problems at all with the neck, BTW. |

Location: Baltimore, MD | For me it's the fit, feel & sound. It's just comfortable to sit down and play. I played half a dozen cutaway acoustics yesterday, including Fender, Alvarez, Seagull, Takamine and a lower-end Martin. The Martin definitely took first prize, but it just didn't match the tonal qualities of the 1869 that I enjoy so much, though I really loved the low action and unfinished neck. Not to mention, I could sit and gaze at my glimmering black 1869 all day! |
