...needs to be something for gigging. I mean, why use a UTE with airlocks?? And who wants to risk tramping about with a beautiful AD-II with all that bling?
So, you'd think that just about any Ovation would do. As long as it played well there is not that much difference between deep / shallow... OP-30 or OP-Pro so you'd think any USA made, e-bay special would do the trick. But no. I've played around with the VIP enough to know that (IMHO), it can make a BIG difference. I know I could carry around any number of stomp boxes. There is always the "Acousti-blasters", "Quack-busters", or Fishmans with 762 different models to choose from. But I don't want to lug accessories around and 5 mic models is plenty enough for me.
I guess I'll just have to wait for the VIPs to trickle down to something like the standard Elite series.

I have any number of guitars to gig with, but for the last few years it's been EA Vipers, they are absolutely idiot-proof, and regardless of the quality of the sound system and skill (or lack) of the sound engineer, it's easy to get a convincing feedback-free sound. If ever I'm uncertain of the venue or sound system my Vipers are the first choice.

I totally agree with Temp. I gig 50% with an EA Viper, 40% with the Tak 75, and 10% with an assortment of others (1581, 1651, VXT, Koala, ES-335, and a USA Strat with SRV pups). If I had to use only one, it would be the EA Viper. I had the EA 58 Viper 12 custom made because of the Viper's utility.

ProfessorBB, do you perform with a band (drums, bass, etc.)? Also curious what type of material you are playing.

I have disproved many idiot proof claims. I should get paid as an equipment tester.

Yes, a professional level band with five pieces: drums, piano, bass, trumpet/rhythm guitar, and me (rhythm/lead guitar). The trumpet player is the leader and he plays a lot of leads on the trumpet. We have two hired singers, both voice majors at DU, and about every two or three weeks, we accompany an organized group of another dozen singers. We supply all the music for a contemporary worship service and there must be a wild endowment for music because the new sound system budget was something like $100,000 and nobody blinked an eye when it was exceeded! We'll do a jazz concert every now and then as well.

I wouldn't call it Christian rock, but it is very up-tempo, some bluesy, some jazzy, a lot of Chris Rice and Green Day stuff, among others, and some original arrangements by the trumpet player. We're playing a Sting number (Fragile) and Dust in the Wind this Sunday, so the selections are quite varied.

Yep. My son had me listening to Green Day over the weekend and I knew there was a day in it. My bad.

ProfessorBB, based on your band mates and the type of material you are doing it sounds like the Viper makes good sense and fits right in.

Sounds like you guys have a lot of talent to cover a lot of different ground. I'd like to see your show sometime.

Let me be the first to vouch for this. I think I was the first to order a custom VXT. I thought hard between a flame maple and a Koa natural, then chose the latter. Looks like the sky's the limit on choices. If you really want some fun, dance around with a Hamer order form.

BrianT, except for me, our band is filled with pros. I'm the only one who didn't do it for a living somewhere along the line. I have to work to keep up.

Three ovation options:
VXT
EA Viper, or
1778T (Very popular gigging machine) with the bungs.
