Rainier | Hi Everybody, I have aquired a very nice 1983 Collector Edition Ovation and would like to know what is the favored string set to use on it. It was set up to be played acoustically by the previous owner and rarely amplified. I will be playing it amplified the majority of the time and would like some lighter strings on it. I have looked on Ovation's web site and done a Google check but cannot find the gauge of strings they were shipped with. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. I prefer D'Addario strings if that makes any difference. Since this guitar has the super shallow bowl I am assuming it will sound much better amplified than straight acoustically. Thanks again everyone. Bob

I think probably tha 12's, not sure though. Experiment a little and you'll find tha right ones. It will sound much better amped. Visit often, search for answers or just ask..someone will always provide an answer. Jim

I told my daughter she could have my 1537 when I'm done with it, but we were talking about an 83 Collector's instead. She kinda liked the looks of one we saw on ebay. She was born in 83, by the way.

I have a Martin Dred, a vintage archtop and several Tele's and Strat's....nothing sounds like this Ovation and I really like the looks and playability of it. It is so nicely made I am not sure why more players do not try the Ovations. It is a keeper and now I am going to want another Ovation I am sure. Thanks again. Bob

Not to put too fine a line on this but does anyone know what strings these Collector Editions shipped from Ovation with? I emailed Ovation but have not received a reply as of yet, Thanks again everyone...I truely appreciate the help.I love the tone this guitar puts out and now just want to improve the playability a bit when amplified. In 83 they might have used Ovation strings, which I think are the same as the Adamas 1818s or D'Addario lights (12-53). Originality on strings is sort of like original tires on cars. Not necessarily a good thing.

I took Mauvais Beal's suggestion and put on a set of Adamas 1818...what a difference it made! It was strung too heavily before and now it just sings. I like it's sound acoustically but it really shines when plugged into my Roland Cube with a bit of delay added.Add that to the quality construction and attention to detail on this Collector Series and that makes it a lifetime keeper. Now I just need to find a book that discusses all the various models of Ovations so that I can start adding a couple more to my collection of players.Any good books you could suggest on Ovations? Thanks again all for your help...I sincerely appreciate it. live from the foothills of Washington State, Bob

I tried some Martin Eric Claptons on my Folklore and really like the sound of it. Maybe I'll try them on something else and see if I like it. I gave most of my Adamas 1818s to my daughters and haven't bought a guitar in awhile that came with some "free" sets.
