hi - i was offered for usd 1.000,-- an ADAMAS I with a neckrepair.
the neck was dowelled through the fretboard, where you can see two dots of the different wood. the neck is repainted black. 1988 adamas I, dusty blue.
what do you think - i must decide fast.

did ovation offer the adamas in dusty blue only or was there also a kind of bluegreen as well. the first photo has a lot of green in the blue and does not look like the dusty blue i know.

If you have played it and see no problems with the neck, then yes.

This Adamas has the early knobs (dots instead of numbers). If these should be the original ones then the guitar has a serial # lower than 1000 and dates 10 years earlier. Picture of the bowl would help. The early models had a non-centric rear access door and mono jack only. Compare to this early 1687-8 .

In good condition worth at least $2k, in this repaired condition I think $1k is reasonable. Let it ride back to the factory, they can make you a new neck.

Should still sound like an Adamas I I would think even if you had a new neck put on at the factory, you would still be in under the value.

I Agree. I'd pay the $1000 and send it in for a new neck. The black painted neck for this model kinda sucks.

would they make the carve the same way like the original one?
how much is a neckreplacement.
you are right , the black neck sucks for this model. i had a custom legend in black, the black neck v-shape was nice but this adamas should have the natural woody feeling. do you think it is possible to remove the black paint and have it done like it should be?

I recognized that room and the guitar. It used to have a bunch of signatures on it, so the top has had them cleaned off. The seller is based in Pittsburgh and has it listed on GBase. If you knew all that then good and well. See his listing here:

What is underneath the paint? It might look really bad, which is why it was painted.

stuart, thanks. i knew the guitar with the signatures. i was ready to buy it even with the signatures, but the seller said that he does not want to sell the guitar with a broken nut and the signatures on the top. so he brought the guitar to his authorized repairman who could remove the signatures without effecting the top finish. he had a new nut made and the backplate is done now. the only thing it has now is the neckrepair. i fixed the deal a couple of minutes ago, when i received not too bad opinions about the deal. the seller looks to be a streight guy because when he sent the guitar to repair he told me he sell it to me. he even updated the gbase listing with a remark that the guitar is on hold - because he promised it to me.

OK, it's definitely one of the early models, made in 1978 or 1979. The factory can put a new neck on it (the one of the 1687-8 reissue). It looks damn close but not 100%, look at these pictures I took in Frankfurt a few years ago.

Recently they made a new neck for my Adamas II and the pricing is reasonable. Contact me if you need some information about the procedure.

karl, thanks for your info on the production date. makes me happy to hear that. you have a great ovation, adamas collection.
i had a custom legend like yours, a black 1982, i sold it to germany because i needed money for another guitar.

i don t know the details of the evolution.
i took the adamas anyway, but it makes me happier even when it is a 77 or 78. gerry

I would wonder why there are things missing from the guitar , and a damaged neck...?..that one has been abused , there may be issues that could show up later ,good as a hobby -project . I certainly would not spend a thousand USD on it..

the damaged neck put that adamas in a price level where i can buy it. otherwise i would not get an adamas I. the top is clean, the neck is painted black and repaired - so what? it can be replaced or i can try to remove the black finish and get it back to original condition.
there are many guitars with neckrepairs in the world. can happen to any of your guitars in a second. the fact that it is 1978 or 1979 makes this guitar even more attractive. i bought it because of those reasons and if i do not have really bad luck this will be a great early player adamas I. by the way nothing is missing on that guitar, except the case. does anyone have an original brown hardshell case for sale?

Hi Gerald , but if U`ve made -up your mind , by all means , go for it , an ADAMAS has a Laminated Top , will hardly improve with age.

vic, i live in austria, vienna. i love adamas since i saw the first ones when i was a 15 years old, in 1981. i always wanted an adamas from that time, but never bought any, because they were never cheap, other than the roundhole ovations. i nearly bought a custom legend black in 1984 for a lot of money (they had a price tag of about 4000 usd at that time. i did not buy it, but 3 years ago i bought a custom legend from 1982 in black. that was some satisfaction, i bought it for 600 usd. now my wish to get a adamas I from that time was possible. so lets hope it is ok. i thought it is a 1988 but it turns out to be a 1978 or 79. exactly what i wish to have.

That subject has been debated many times and there are advocates of both camps.
