Random quote: “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” -Plato

For those who are interested in home recording, and get VH1 Classic Albums on the tube, you might want to check out the Judas Priest British Steel segment.

You might be thinking... huh???

Seriously. This album was recorded at Ringo Starr's house, formerly John Lennon's house. Besides some funny tidbits, the techniques used to record are "old school" by todays standards, and they even touch on what a shame it is that we've lost some of the fun of "creating" music in the studio. Today, rather than "create" like they did back then, we do a quick search on the internet, find the sample and drop it in. Not as much fun as slamming doors, or picking just the right silverware to make a marching sound.

Where they placed the instruments in the house and why, and a story about bouncing Ringo's silverware on a tray to create a "marching" affect, it's all pretty interesting and a good testament that the most important tools in a studio, any studio big or small, are your ears.

I read an interesting story about how the Beatles did all the background sounds in "Yellow Submarine" (including swishing water around in a bucket they borrowed from the janitor) and also the "crackling fire" in Revolution No. 9, which was done by frying an egg in a hot pan.
