You guys seem to know something about everything, so here goes:

I'm replacing the head unit in my '06 Grand Caravan. The purpose is a) the original one sucks, b) complete iPod integration. I purchased a SONY from Crutchfields - it came with detailed instructions, wiring harnesses, etc.

The physical install went without a hitch - turned it on... the little radio signal level meter is doing it's thing - but no sound at all.

Thus begins my journey.

It's too convoluted to explain everything I did so far - the end result is that there is an infinity amplifier in the rear near one of the speakers that apparently can't be triggered by a replacement head unit. The options are to a) bypass said amp and wire straight to the speakers or b) replace the amp.

What I would like to know from the collective wisdom and experience of the group - is it true that the amp cannot be used and if it's not true - how do I do it?

I've spoken to many so-called experts and went on Dodge forums and so on and received many different useless answers.

Thanks!

In my experience, Crutchfield has a solid support staff. Have you called them and asked a tech? That would be my first step.

Wease - I've spent literally hours on the phone with them. They are very knowledgable and helpful and finally led me to where I am now. They are only as good as the info they have at hand. They were convinced that the system was set up one way and had me searching for a connector that wasn't there. They finally sent me in a different direction - bypass the amp or replace it.

Yikes. Hours, eh? Been there several times (although not with Crutchfield) and hated it every time. And I would certainly agree that they're only as good as the info in front of them. Wish I could help - I used to install units, amps, equalizers, speakers, etc. for friends when I was younger but it sounds like you're already beyond what I could help you with. Hope it works out for you, Mike.

Mike,

I ran into a similar situation on an install I did on an Aerostar van. Same deal with Crutchfield. I'd bet that the connector is there, but it is buried deep. I eventually found it and put the prescribed relay into the loop and all went well.

(Am I helping now?)

So, is the problem with the factory amp turing on? or is it a problem with the audio signal getting to the amp?

We had an audio problem in one of our cars a while ago. Got a new car and it cleared right up.

Wease - not yet. I wasn't able to work on it yesterday and probably won't be able to until the weekend. I'll get in touch when I can work on it again.

Mauvais - a new car would definitely be my first choice. As you may have noticed - this is a minivan we're talking about in the first place. Can you put wheels on a 47RI? I'll be driving this one for a couple of more years and spending alot of time in it so I may as well make it as pleasant as possible.

Yak - the problem is with the amp turning on.
