Hi everyone

I have an Ovation model number 1117,in mint conditiopn according to ovations records the last digit ie 7 denotes that this is a Glen Campbell Deluxe (Artist) Balladeer?
However when I read further the number 1117 relates to a Legend.

Please can someone enlighten me as to the exact model and year, I bought this in about 1982 off a work colleague but think it is a lot earlier.

SA,

The serial number will help date it. A 1117 is indeed a Legend model. The Glen Campbell model is the 1127.

The 7 indicates a Legend configuration, but the 2 means it's an artist depth bowl, hence, it's a Glen Campbell Artist, as noted above. The 1 just to the left of the 2 means it's an acoustic only (if it were an acoustic electric, the model number would be 1627).

Without the serial number (on a small label inside up by the neck block) you can't date it's construction. It could be anytime between 1970 and about 1984.

Even without the serial number, we can come closer to the actual date. Does it have a metal-like label inside (where the model number is)? If so, it was built between about 1972-1978. If it's a blue label, it's probably between 1978-1884. Does it have a truss rod cover? That would also mean it was built in the 1970's. No truss rod cover means late 1970's to about 1984.

I could also talk about the bracing inside, but just from what I've given you, if there's no serial number, you can still get an idea of when it was built.

Hi Guys thanks for the replies,

The serial number is 249562 on a small white label above the blue paper Ovation label inside.
The wording Ovation has a brown colour at the tip, there is no truss rod cover, it has gold tuners.

Looks like it could be late 70s or early 80 and is a Legend after all.

Thanks for your kind advice

1981. It's got a K-bar in the neck (heavy, but extemely stable) and probably A bracing. It's one helluva a great guitar. Being 26 years old, it's got a great mellow sound. Post some pics of it.

Hi Moody

According to the Ovation Timeline the Legend 1117 was built June 1972, and replaced the Deluxe Balladeer?

1981 sounds just right,
Thanks again, I will definately post some photos(next few days) it is a lovely guitar and is an absolute joy to play,

Don't trust the timeline. The Legend first came out in 1970 and did indeed replace the Deluxe Balladeer.

Also the serial numbers on the O page give you a close estimation. They are not always exact.
