From the picture it looks like a Legend cutaway deep bowl. Or is it a mid-bowl?

http://www.davesguitar.com/products.html?13256 - need to navigate to Misc Acoustics (although it looks like Dave's an Ovation dealer now).

I'm guessing they typo'd the model # and it's a 1767 - Legend 1767

I'd guess deep.
Have to guess, I don't remember that far back!
The mid didn't really come back till the mid 90's

It's the same as the 1617 (a/e deep legend) but with a cutaway. Dave

The 166X guitars appeared only during 1983, and although listed in the 1984 catalog, they were probably phased out by early 1984. These were the first generation Ovation cutaways, and thus had a new numerical designation that had not been used before. All of the guitars in the series were deep bowl cutaways, including the 1661 (Standard), 1663 (Classic), 1667 (Legend), 1669 (Custom Legend).

I have been a fan of this series, in that they are among the last of the Ovations with glossed necks, which I prefer, both aesthetically and functionally. If I am not mistaken, when this series was converted to the 17XX series, the satin necks began.

Another advantage of this series, in my opinion, is the placement of the stacked V/T knobs, which were moved to the top side, and thus, and were more easily accessible. However, the electronics were soon replaced by the original OP-24 preamp, with the same easily aceesible volume knob.

I have owned a 1663 Classic for thirteen years, and would not trade it for a 1763 simply for the fact of the glossed neck. The 1663 also has a rudimentary cutaway that exteriorly appears the same as other cutaways, but interiorly has a reinforcement system to support the cutaway that does does appear on later models.

That's because those bowls were cut away and had a piece added. Later we had a mold made and the bowls were made with cutaways.

Love the grain on that top. Looks like someone's working on a "Willie Nelson" hole below the soundhole!

For some reason, in 1983-84, Ovation had some really spectacular spruce that aged wonderfully. I've seen a number of their guitars built in those years and invariably, they all have beautiful tops.

That particular model is a great guitar. Wonderful sounding (A braced), and beautiful to look at. And I'm with Bob in that I really love the glossed neck.

About 2 months ago, in a group jam, a guy showed up with a 1667. He had it strung with extra lights and even with those strings, the tone was great.....

Wish I could afford an early 1777 midbowl Legend. I'd like to hear the difference with my 1767..
