I have two separate questions:-

Firstly I own a W597 ('99) and a 1581-2 ('83). The battery in the W clips in next to the pre-amp controls. If I play it for a few hours a day the battery lasts about a week. By contrast I have owned the 1581 since March, I assume it also has a battery but I've never had to change it and assume it must lie inside somewhere? If there is a 9v battery how come it lasts many more times than the W597?

My other question is with the W597. Although the pre-amp works fine (as long as the battery is still good) the onboard tuner does not work any more. Not a major issue as I use a clip on anyway but I'd like to get it working again. Any ideas?

Thanks

Marc

Hi Marc,
what preamp is installed in your W579 and has it an output with XLR?
I had the same issue with an OP-Pro, the output unit was the Problem.

Hi Marc,

If it's the OP-24 then try this :-

Go into 'Search' and select 'Search all Forums' Scroll down and highlight 'The Vault 2006'. In 'Keywords' enter "op-24 owners manual. In .. the 'Search all posts in the last...... Highlight ' 12 months then click on 'Search all posts'.

Hit 'Go' and "There ya go. I think the 3rd post down from 'Worshipleader' may be the one you are looking for but there is also plenty if info here on the OP-24.

Hope this helps........................... James.

The diagram can be seen here: http://www.ovationtribute.com/Ovation%20Schematics/Ovation_Optima_P... To access the tuner you have to go inside the pre-amp house.
Assuming that the individual components work: If the green LED blinks when you activate the tuner it could be bad connection "FET Out" between Slider Board and Tuner Board. If the green LED does not blink as indicator that the tuner is on then things to check will be bad solder joints or contact points a functional test of SW203 on the Slider Board.

But start testing with a new battery. The tuner does not work on phantom power.

You're welcome ... Try to open the back cover and look inside the 1581.

The optima has a battery low indicator ergo it must have a battery.

It has a battery. If it is the two wooden knob preamp, then you'll see a little screw on the outside of the bowl, not far from the knobs. Open the back access panel, then loosen that screw (doesn't come right out, just loosens) and you can access the battery. The two-knobber preamps are really gentle on batteries. Think I've changed mine once in several years.

The VIP, on the other hand, eats batteries for breakfast. Mmmm, think I'll have another one ...

If your preamp is an Optima, there should be a battery box next to the preamp...

Sometimes the outer box has a sliding cover instead of a clip like this one.
If yours does not have a battery box beside the controls like this one, then your battery should be inside the body somewhere. Either with a clip to hold the battery, or with a box.
With a box, there is usually a screw-head on the side of the bowl. If you turn that 90° counter-clockwise it will release the box... So be sure that you have your hand on it to hold it when it comes loose.
Then there will be a sliding lid on that inner box.

Hope that Helps

Tpa-my apologies for not thanking you for your reply re getting the tuner back on line for the W597. I was pressed for time when I answered but I will give your suggestion a try. Thanks.

Arthur-my W597 is the one above and eats batteries. The 1581 still has the same battery for the last 7 months as was installed by the previous owner so I have no idea how old the battery is but it's still going. I'll have a go at finding the housing inside. Mines the type with the 2 wooden knobs. Thanks for your post.

The W597 shouldn't eat batteries. I used to have one and the batteries lasted a good long time. Unless you're leaving a cord plugged into it, there is definitely something wrong. Most simple cause would be that the switch inside the cord socket is not switching off when you take the cord out. You can buy an endoscope for about $25 on eBay - stick it inside and verify that the relevant parts are separating when the cord comes out - if that's the problem, a bit of gentle bending may fix it. You may be able to verify the same thing with a multimeter. Someone else may be able to tell you what you should find when you poke around with that.

You are welcome. The 1581 can to my knowledge have one of a few different preamp model depending on year of manufacture. Identificaton is not complicated if You look here: http://www.ovationtribute.com/Pr%E9-amplis/Ovation%20Preamps.html

My 1597 has an Optima preamp which your W597 probably has. I guess that battery life depends on how much it is used. I have mostly played it acoustically for the recent year and only used the preamp for tuning. During this year the barrety has not been replaced.

All Ovation and Adamas electric/acoustic guitars need batteries for pickup operation.

Speak for yourself. Mine has a flux capacitor.

Cool!

If ya play fast enough (88 mph), through a 1.21 gigawatts amplifier, will it time travel?!

TAFKAR-that's a good point about the internals not switching off properly. However, I've even made a point of removing the battery as soon as I've finished playing but the battery still doesn't last too long. I just wondered if the fact that the W597 is a lot newer and therefore the preamp with all the knobs and sliders it has means it would use up the battery more quickly. It just seems that the difference in battery life between the W and 1581 is huge. One is measured in hours, the other in months or even years.

If your preamp is the same as the one Arthur posted a pic of above, then it's an Optima. I've had several O's and A's with the Optima preamp and never had any issues with the battery dying early. I would check the integrity of the wiring for shorts between the battery box and the preamp with a multimeter.
Are you using the same brand of battery for both guitars?

The Optima in my 99 Collector ate batteries. Occasionally, I'd notice one of the lights on the pre-amp was on as the guitar was hanging on the wall with no cord plugged into it. I never figured out what was causing the battery drain, so I just took the battery out. I sold it a few years ago and told the purchaser to do the same. I haven't heard from him about any issue, so I assume he just takes the battery out. I never liked the small print on the tuner, so I didn't use it much. It worked well when I did use it, though.

Waskel-I've never had to change the battery on the 1581 it's still got the same battery it arrived with from the US back in March so no idea which brand. My brother in law is an electrician, I'll get him to stick a multimeter on it.

Thanks for all your responses.
