So I just strung up my O with the Earthwood strings (medium light - I hope I didn't do anything wrong). All I can say is WOW. What a difference. Very loud with huge overtones. It's going to take some getting used to. I'm going to have to practice to get to the quiet parts. I forget who recommended them, but thanks for the suggestion.

Initially sound good, but they go dull very quickly

I generally like and use the Ernie Ball 2008 Earthwood 80/20 Bronze Rock and Blues Acoustic Guitar Strings. Slightly heavier bass strings, with a solid G-string: 10-13-17-30-42-52. They sound great when they first go on (all strings do, right?), and they stay nicely playable, but I agree they may not be as bright as long. I have a set of Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze on one guitar, and they do seem to have lasted longer (and don't seem to squeak quite as much), though I'm not sure nearly quadruple the price is worth it.

If you play a lot, change your strings to suit. I buy the Earthwards for less than $5 a set and am very happy with them. Not to say, though, that when the four sets I have in the drawer wear out that I won't try something else.

I got the Earthwood 2003 Medium Light. the: gauges 12-16-24w-32-44-54. A little heavier on the bass side than the D'addarrio I've been using (the Daddarrio gauges are : 12-16-24-32-42-53). I like the projection of the thicker low strings, but the higher E and B strings get a bit drowned out. The sound fine, but they have lost some of their shimmer from when I put them on a couple of days ago.

Hello to everyone,

I changed many sets of strings in the last few years to check, which of them sound best on my Standard Elite...

I like the sound of new uncoated strings - but the sound and high frequencies are lost too fast for me. Sometimes you think it´s lost in a few hours and wanted to change them again...

So I prefer coated strings and that´s the list of my favorite sets of strings:

- DR Dragon Skin DSA-12
- Ernie Ball Everlast
- Elixir Phosphor-Bronze
- D´addario EXP16

The Dragon Skin sound good a very long time and have that uncoated feel and sound (not dull) - the Elixir sound a bit more dampened, but have excellent longevity. So if longevity is your first choice, than Elixir are worth trying...

Best regards,

First the obvious: there sure are a lot of strings to try! I don't like the Daddarrio EXP's. It doesn't matter how long they last if don't sound good when you put them on, plus the added expense. Since I invested in the GC string club and I have $5.00 off a packs of strings per month for the next 9 months, and am guilty of New Jersey Yankee thriftiness (read: cheap - lol), I'll stick with the "free" strings for now. Is it OK for the guitar to put mediums on? I'm thinking of trying D'addarrio mediums. (gauge: 13-17-26-35-45-56). Anyone have any experience? (Oh yeah referencing cheapness: Daddarrio has the players club and I'm still looking forward to a T-Shirt!)

Unless there is something wrong with it, Ovations will handle mediums with ease - you may need to slightly tighten the truss rod, but wait and see.

Update on the Earthwood medium light: I played out last night and 2 1/2 weeks later, they still sound great. I really enjoy the bigger bass sound of the low end. I don't expect more than 3 weeks out of $5.00 strings, so these will do. They seem to have "passed the audition". (I hope you all don't mind one of John Lennon's jokes).

Here'ds a picture of my gig - (just an open mic, don't be jealous). Oh yeah, when the MC introduced me, he commented, "Here's Jonathan with his Ovation guitar." It could be we have a furture convert!

Seriously, the guy ^^^ could use some help. It looks to me he has a "reliced" (no pick guard; big hole in the soundboard) Baby Taylor with what looks to me a brand new case.
