Does anyone have any opinions regarding the performance of an Adamas SR2080 relative to an Adamas W597?

I currently have a W597 and it has a really sweet sound but I feel that the projection is somewhat muted. Does the SR2080's suspended top and non-lacquered finish result in improved projection?

Everyone will have something different to say but I personally think the 2080 series blows the W597 out of the water. I do agree with your assessment of the sound of a W597.

I've never had a W597 or a 2080SR

I've had the first 2080 (not suspended) and decided to say goodbye to it when I bought my Adamas 2 reissue (with suspended ring)

I thought the Adamas 2 projected quite a bit more than the 2080. I attributed it to the ring.

That said, I actually spoke with Darren at the factory about the 2080 vs the 2080SR, and he seemed to like the non-suspended one better. So to each his own.

Buy both and see for yourself. Sell off the loser

Thanks a lot for your replies! I have owned a suspended top Adamas before ... but it was a shallow bowl and its therefore difficult to
make comparisons with a deep bowl. I must say though that the suspended top did feel more alive.

So here is a SR 2080 on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adamas-SR-2080-/151890821070?hash=item235d6...

any comments on a fair price for this instrument?

The one on ebay is certainly cheaper than the new one on Al's website. BUT the picture on the label does not say SR-NWT, and the manual in the picture looks like the one that came with my LX which is from a previous generation, so a question to the seller about the age of the guitar would make sense. The starting bid looks fine, but there may be a high reserve.

I think the manual is a generic one that came out with all the late model Ovations, or at least the acoustics.

Also, looking more closely at the unfocused pictures, there does not seem to be the bevel around the edge that would suggest a suspended top.

I sold my W597 to help finance the '08 Collectors. There is a world of difference between the two.

So the eBay listed guitar was purchased new in 2013 but he does not know the date of manufacture.
The model number is 2080 NWT 12073 and the serial number is 023324.

No mention of "SR".

Does SR designate suspended top?

"SR"= Suspension Ring

(I'm guessing)

Your guess is correct (at least according to a quick google search). The guitar on ebay is definitely not an SR. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing.

Damon67,

What did you not like about the "non SR" 2080?

The SR is not only the suspension ring but also the hand laid bowl. Funny thing is when I was browsing through the Internet archives looking for list prices there was one year when both were offered and the non SR had a substantially higher list price. But then the information on the website may also have been goofed up.

I loved it. There's video of me with that guitar all over the WWW

Then I got the Adamas 2 and it didn't get played. I liked it better. It had a hand laid deep bowl vs the contour on the 2080. The reissue just sounded better. The 2080 was dull in comparison in my mind

BTW, I don't know for sure, but I do not think all supension ring Adamas guitars have hand laid bowls

I thought only the more recent GT and SR ones had the new generation hand laid bowls. Didn't think the reissues or older models had that at all.

Bowls were hand laid until the early 80's. Usually if they're reissuing something that had a hand laid bowl originally, it has a hand laid bowl as well. My Adamas 2 reissue might not be hand laid. I don't think the original 1581 was. But the 2080 wasn't for sure.

I'm not sure about the GT or SR ones that were built before the closure, but I don't think the 2080SR has a hand laid bowl.

The OFC2 is hand laid for sure. I didn't think it was SR though.

I played both when i got my 2080-NWT(the one on the bay looks to be the same, it is without SR). They both had their own sound. The W597 while solid and nice sounding lacked the fuller tone of the 2080. The 2080 has deeper lows and greater sustain. The W597 seems brighter with an almost "twang" sound in comparison.
I ended up with the 2080 and have been very happy with it both playing plugged live and noodling at home. It is a close second to my 1680 which is the best I have ever played with the deep bowl and wide neck, but that is another comparison all together...

You would not be dissapointed with the grab.

I would expect that many of the small-batch/custom runs like OFC or 47RI would have a hand laid bowl, but better documentation should exist on the regular production runs. I have a 30th Anniversary 1687 which supposedly reproduces the 1977 model, and I don't think it has a hand laid bowl. The 2011 Ovation website has bot old and new (SR, GT) models, though unfortunately the specs are not very revealing:

https://web.archive.org/web/20110126071556/http://www.ovationguitars.com/guitars

Interestingly the NWT is listed with LX bracing, SR with Quintad bracing for another difference.
