I would really like to know whether the Ovation 1627VL-4 could be obtained as a lefthand model. It would be an absolute dream to get my left hand on such a vintage "reissue."

Does anybody know whether any such lefties were manufactured or whether they can be ordered as such from anywhere?

In the old days you would just order them.
I believe that there were only a couple of USA "production" Lefties.
And maybe 2 lefty Celebrities.
But I am sure that you could custom-order whatever you want back then.

So I would guess that you might be able to custom order now from DWOvation.
They were making EA Vipers and such at the Grand Re-Opening.

Just so you know... That VL model is made in Korea.

That's good to know that the possibility to custom order could potentially be opened up again with the recent re-opening. Though I imagine not for quite some time since they'll have to get the first rush of guitars out of the door first, given their limited capacity.

I have also yet to hear back from a local dealer who has the Ovation 1627VL-4 in stock whether any leftie version were ever made or recently so. It's curious that the official Ovation website hasn't been listing an authorized Ovation dealer in Europe for quite some time now.

The Korea-made models use lower-cost materials, which I'm actually fine with since you still get tons of value for the money. And a professional setup can go a long way.

One other thing: does the 1627VL-4 model qualify as a Legend or Balladeer?

Fender made this thing...
They called it a Legend but that is just one of the many things that is wrong with it.

The original 1627 was a "Glen Campbell Artist" with a shallower bowl for the time.
On this remake, the "VL" is supposed to mean "Vintage Lyrachord".
But it really was an attempt to make the bowl in Asia.
That didn't work and the bowl was flexible.
So Fender tried to pretend that was intentional.
And if you look inside the innards look kinda rough.
If you can get one for cheap, it might actually sound good. (who knows)
I have actually bid on one before, but I wouldn't go higher than $300.

looks like chopper gun glass or mat instead of cloth through the sound hole which would explain everything.

And I always wondered why there were no reviews to be found on the 1627VL-4. Now it all makes sense. And the 1627VL-4 does go for dead-cheap (in the States).

The local dealer has informed me today that no lefthand models of the 1627VL-4 are to be had. I guess I'm back to square one, trying to scoop up a vintage L717 or something.

Leonard,

Fellow lefty here. Left-handed O's are a limited breed, in part because Ovation decided not to make the new bowl with the "belly cut" in a lefty format (it's a cutaway design, so it must be lefty specific to be used). That's too bad; I would have ordered one of those immediately when they came out, in part because I really liked the new neck shape, which moved away from a sharp V to more of a nice C shape.

There were lefty Legends (including models with cutaways) and Elites back before F****r bought the company...I had a black Legend that was a beautiful guitar. But the neck shape finally made me sell it. Now I have an older ('93 or so) L717 with that same V neck shape, but I'm hanging on to this one, at least until I see if lefties will be made again in Hartford.

Good luck on your search. Lefties come up fairly regularly on e-bay and Reverb (I found the L717 on Reverb at a dealer in Seattle area) - you just have to be patient, and may have to negotiate a bit to get a reasonable price.

Thanks for the kind words and great advice.

I, for one, prefer V-shaped necks; they usually yield a smaller fretboard radius and narrower nut, all of which I'm a great fan of. The C-shaped neck is a little too bulky for a fast neck, but that's just personal preference. I can still play a C-shaped Texan without problems, but prefer to no ends V shapes like they were made in the past but not so much these days anymore.

I'm still looking left and right for a good old leftie Ovation. But there's no hurry; sooner or later I'll come across a non-cutaway model I'll like. Let's hope the new year sees the Hartford factory pick up steam again, so we'll be delighted with new US-made models and proper custom ordering.
