So I just received an old Folklore.
It sounds nice with ancient strings on it. I gotta change them.
But it looks like the binding has shrunk at the waist.
(Yeah, it was in the eBay photos if I had looked really close)
Do y'all think that it will be a problem?
And how do I fix it if Necessary?

See? It sticks out on the back enough to hold that pick.

Otherwise, it is a nice guitar... And very Light.

1114-4 and 1614-4

Now I am gonna change the strings, dust-out the inside, clean and oil the fingerboard.
All that stuff.
So... Any advice from the BFLG or anyone else would be appreciated.

Congratulations,Nice guitar what year?
Can you push the binding back in place with a little pressure,if so you could try a little glue and a clamp to get it back where it belongs,if not to truly fix it you might have to re-bind the top

Ooo! I just noticed that you can see the bracing thru the top.
I noticed this on my guitar in person, but you can see it in this photo.

I am not saying that this is a good thing or a bad thing.

You might try using a hair dryer on it. Warm up the binding, & determine if it will stretch back into place. Then, apply some binding cement on it.

Hey, if it gets bad enough you could use it as a cigarette holder !!!

All kidding aside, I've seen this on a few of mine and never bothered to do anything about it. Maybe heat it, glue it and clamp it might do the trick.

I have put EJ26 Custom Lights on it.
It sounds really nice.

Yeah Dave... I may not do anything to it. Just play it as is.
That binding could have been like that for decades.

On seeing the bracing through the top, have you ever seen that happen before? I've never even heard of it ('course, I haven't heard much). How would that happen? That picture's not just light shadows from the top wood settling around the bracing is it? Heck, maybe you will have special, ghostly-type powers when you play it. Instead of Old Man Arthur, maybe become Guitar Psychic Arthur. Predict fortunes while playing it. Could be a whole new model for busking fame and fortune. In any event, it still looks trippy!

Yes, I have seen it happen on other Ovations.
Of course, I cannot find another photo of one when I am looking for it.

I think it is caused by the glue sinking into the wood.
I could be wrong.

OMA, I think I'd just leave it but if you must, the whip tips and pipettes that Stewmac sells might be thin enough to let you drop a bit of super glue in the void. The c.a. dries clear and would surely stop any additional spreading...you probably already thought of this but...just my 2 cents.

the braces show through the top because of the type of glue used in the ultraflrequency bonding. no big deal. The early elites have it too

OMA, I'd drop superglue in there too. Then try taping it.

I still haven't fixed this...

Would a baggie full of HOT water soften the binding?

Dan? Chris? Mike? Ken? Any of y'all experienced folks?

Thank You

Art,

The water will go from 200+ degrees to 180 right after it's poured, so that might not be the best solution.

In the recent work I did taking off the tops and removing bridges and rosettes, I had better luck with the heat gun.

The caveat is that getting it soft enough to stretch back down to the body will likely cause it to warp. (read: distort)

Another approach might be what Beal recommended. If you can press the binding back into place, then you might try dripping in super glue, then taping it down or buy some binding rubber bands from Stewmac.

Regardless of whether you use tape or rubber bands, you should make sure that you can get the binding back down into place with a dry run first. If you can't press it down with your fingers, it's unlikely that the tape or rubber bands will do the job.

Eeeeh, Yeah.
I will probably just live with it.
It has probably been this way for years.
I have been playing this Folklore today, and it works just fine.

Bracing pattern shows on my Pacemaker too where the sunburst is just slightly faded. Put it down to mojo

You could pick up a long enough Jorgenson style clamp to try for a couple bucks.

If you decide to use a clamp, you'll want to make two cauls shaped to the curve of the body, one for each side so you don't put uneven pressure on the binding and guitar.
