Hey everyone.

I'm looking to buy my 1st Ovation, as the post title suggests. After careful consideration, and determining that a new Adamas is waaay out of my price range, I decided to look here!

I've narrowed my search down: I want a 1970's Acoustic, preferably a Custom Balladeer, 1982 Collector's, or perhaps one of the Anniversary models, basically anything that is non-cutaway. I don't want to spend over $1000. I would hope this is doable!

I did mention Adamas in the ad as well. These, I'm not sure on the price range. They seem to be more desirable, and of course, I want one! I don't want a cutaway one, but if someone has one they are willing to let go, and hopefully for $2000 or less (Less is better for a college student), then perhaps you should inbox me, whynot?

Thanks all!

-Marc

If no one here offers on up, check Reverb. I've seen a couple of 1982 CE guitars on there, both within your budget and appear to be in very good condition. Here's one well within your budget:

https://reverb.com/item/3626890-1982-ovation-collectors-series-blueburst-first-year-of-collectors-138-original-case

Getting an Adamas at that budget will be especially tough.

Best of luck in your search!

Check eBay regularly, or Reverb. Plenty of good playable Ovations show up in the under $400 range. Those may have finish cracks but not wood cracks, some dings and fret wear. For twice that price but still under $1000 you can find nice examples of those guitars. The finish cracks are purely cosmetic. Be sure the structure of the guitar is good and the neck doesn't need a reset.

My 2 cents: be patient and wait for a clean, good one. The 1982 is one of the best sounding and playing Ovations ever built, it's a Super-Legend with a super-tone. I had three 1982s searching for the cleanest, all of them sounded and played awesome. It's balanced, comfortable, great looking and friendly. If I had to choose if getting rid of it or of my 2008-5 I'd have to suffer. The 1982 is pure (blue) gold, from the original ad page on Guitar Player with a proud Beal showing it. Pure (blue) gold. Awesome guitar, serch the good one, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the advice, friends! I think a 1982 is a good bet, and I've contacted John Budny to get an idea of what a refinish would be (Probably a good idea). I think I may have found what I'm gonna do, but I'll have to wait and see! I might still be able to get a new 50th Anniversary Folklore, but that'd be pushing it, and to be honest, I'd like to get a Deacon/Breadwinner as well.

Hey, marcthemusician,
Eastwood Guitars.com has a Breadwinner clone for a mere $799.00 CAN., and the case is about $85-$100.00 extra, depending on the particular Eastwood model it fits. Yes, I know. It's NOT a real Ovation. It's a clone. I'm not sure what your budget is for one of those, but it may possibly be more within your reach?

Haha $2400 isn't chump change to the average Joe, and I'm a college student, which makes it worse :P

I saw the Eastwood Breadwinner clone, but I've heard things about Eastwoods; not that they're bad, mind you, but that they're a bit overpriced for what you're getting, which is a fairly well built Korean guitar with meh hardware. I've been that route before, and though it might be an option someday, for about $800 or so USD I think I can get a real deal Breadwinner!

Incidentally, I think I may have found my 1982... Stay tuned, folks.

Found one! Purchased from Durdel's Music Shop in Toledo, Ohio. Paid $1200, mint condition. Maybe a bit too much, but I was willing to pay for mint condition. I'll post in General Posting once I get it (Next Tuesday, hopefully.)
