Six months ago I had the 19th surgery of my career of providing college tuition for 4 different surgeon's kids. It was a urological fix, not intestinal related as the previous 18 were.

The next one is for an accident I had during my daily workout at a nearby gym. I was on a leg press machine, seated on a chair that slides along a rail. I had just lifted 350 pounds to the top when the weight lifting cable snapped. It sent the seat rocketing backwards until it hit an end stop, slamming my back into the top of the seat. I fractured 3 thoracic vertebrae. An MRI showed extensive damage to my neck that is going to require the fusing of two vertebrae.

A personal injury attorney said I had a solid case, despite the injury waiver you sign to join a gym. Those are routinely overturned in such cases. The reason I'm posting this on a guitar forum? Numb hands are currently making guitar playing sound worse than a preteen playing punk rock on a Walmart first act guitar! My weekly Friday jam sessions are on hold now as well.

On a lighter not, following my 19th surgery 6 months ago I chose to end the narcotic pain meds very early. They tended to make me very verbose in offensive ways on online forums so I abstained. The next surgery will be no different. I'm anxious for this to be all over with so I can resume the progress I've been making taking over the lead solos at the jam. I've been having the privilege of being schooled in soloing by an 83 year old Texas music legend at the jam sessions.

Would it be possible for you to document more fully your surgeries 1 through 19 so that we all have a better understanding of your life and health struggles? For example:
1. The type of surgery and year
2. Dr's name
3. What drugs you were on?
4. Was a lawsuit involved?
5. Was any part of Duane Allman's body involved
6. Did the injury take place on a tour bus.

Thanks in advance.

There is something missing....Dave typically introduces us to a female in his posts. Melissa and Ashley Campbell come to mind.

Dave... in a perfect world, if you had just 50 cents for every person who plays a kazoo tonight for new year's eve you wouldn't need the lawsuit. But that's just a dream. Thing is, though, it's one of the very few instruments you can still play with numb hands.. so all is not a loss on the musical front. Sometimes ya just gotta dive deep to keep it alive until you can get the guitar chickens to come home to roost.

I'm still trying to figure out how a snapped weight cable would cause the seat to rocket backwards to the end stop on a leg press. I can picture your legs instantly extending rapidly forward, but in that case the pressure would be mostly releasing off of the seat, not onto it. I mean, a guy who can leg 350 lbs. I'd think would have vertebrae that is not all that fragile. Was the cable part of the seat configuration?

Would it be possible for you to document more fully your surgeries 1 through 19 so that we all have a better understanding of your life and health struggles? For example:
1. The type of surgery and year
First was in 1989 at age 36 for massive spontaneous internal bleeding from a ruptured, very rare birth defect on small intestine. Lost over half my blood volume before getting into emergency surgery.
2. Dr's name

Sewell, Poettker,Smith, Elbert and Morey were five surgeons I've had.
3. What drugs you were on?

Morphine, hydrocodone, OxyContin, Zohydro, and for awhile methadone.
4. Was a lawsuit involved?

I tried once. For the surgeon whose work left me hospitalized for 6 months with complications. Unable to eat for a whole year following that one. IV nutrition that blew out gall bladder that had to be removed after it was necrotic. The doc refused to try and fix me. Took a year to find another surgeon willing to try. Successful outcome. My first meal was two hotdogs with relish, mustard, onions and sliced jalapenos. Big mistake. The mother of all gut aches ensued but it felt like nirvana to me.
5. Was any part of Duane Allman's body involved

I asked for a donation of a few feet of intestine but he was pretty attached to what he had. Greg offered some sinus tissue but after the day I spent with him seeing him ravage it with huge lines snorted off a bathroom sink I passed.
6. Did the injury take place on a tour bus.

The DNA observable on all the seating areas meant I stoood most of the time on the bus. I was offered a four hour ride to their next venue but had a business to run.

Thanks in advance.

You're quite welcome and the concern and curiosity was heartwarming. Fortunately I have a sense of humor about the insanity the industrial grade narcotic pain management wreaked in my brain. I actually feel like I experienced a lot of what many drug addled rockers exhibited with their behaviour. It's all good now. Truly not looking forward to hardware in my neck but my poor spinal cord is being seriously compressed and my guitar picking is clumsy. For anyone who remembers an old post about giving up guitar because of problems forgetting my repertoire, turned out there was a drug for that. Provigil. The drug the fictional Limitless pill was patterned after. It's reaching far into the 90% of our brain science says we don't use. My memory is almost eidetic now. Which means I vividly recall every riposte interaction you and I ever had and they are an endless source of amusement. Don't ever change bro!

Ha! Okay....decent comeback.
I don't often post on this board, but when I do, it's usually because of you.

Eidetic?? Could not find it. And Zohydro is simply another form of hydrocodone. Other than that you have certainly had an interesting medical sojourn covering many years!!

Holy crap. Made my eyes glaze over just to read that. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was one or more of those that caused my niece's Breadwinner to spend the night in the bottom of the pool. Summer of '83, I think. She thought she was as cool and rich as Lita Ford, but I don't really recall her as having any surgeries. Hmmm.. go figure. Anyway, I traded her an old Aria and $150 bucks for it.. and that sobered her right up.. so I'm glad to hear you were able to back off in time to avert tragedy.

Eidetic is photographic memory. Zohydro is vastly beyond hydros. It's pure codeine with no acetaminophen. Now back to regularly scheduled guitar talk.

Zohydro sounds interesting. I mean, who needs that annoying Tylenol anyway? Isn't that bad for your liver?

Lost the strength and feeling in both my hands and feet as a result of chemo.(They were giving me 3-times the normal dosage) Since then I have been taking high doses of vitamin B-12, after discovering it was one of the only things proven to encourage nerve growth. So far it has been getting much better, about a 50% improvement from last year.

ROFL - Not to laugh at the OP's maladies, but the comments here suggest I'm going to really enjoy the humor in this newly found forum.

I just had carpel tunnel surgery and still have one hand to go. Anyone know any good stories about that? I could use some humor for how I feel. :-)

I've been gone a few days and came back to Weaser using restraint. Times have really changed. Weaser or Darkbar never would have hesitated to respond to a post asking about what you could do with one hand while holding your breath.

Neck fusion coming up next Thursday the 8th. Already scared to death, even with 19 prior surgeries under the belt. Hate the idea of my spine being altered with a plate and screws. If it gets the numb hands issue resolved it'll be worth it. Lawsuit against the gym is progressing. Owners assets include the building and all equipment. Could be headed towards owning a workout facility. I'll use the stage in the gymnasium annex for open mic nights. Might end up worth it after all.

"even with 19 prior surgeries under the belt."

Maybe you should find a better-qualified urologist.  The Texas Phalloplasty Institute in your area, claims to be the best.

Spinal surgeries have improved immensely in the past 10 years. Good luck with the fusion.
