I just got a 2nd (3rd maybe) hand VXT in gloss black. It's an amazing guitar. It has the beginnings of some light pick haze, not yet rash. When I play with my fingers my pinky will rest on the face of the guitar.

So here's my idea: Has anyone ever put a smart phone screen protector over paint etc?

Yes... sort of.

I have ordered static cling Clear Pick-guards.
HERE is one. This is a sheet. There are other shapes and sizes.
So that you can pick the size of your sheet.

Anyway, I am sure that you could use a screen protector.
And it might be more convenient to just get one from your local store.
Let us know how it works-out.

Snarky is good I thought.

What Arthur shared is good stuff.

What Al said is correct as well... we shouldn't be scratching the instrument if played correctly.

well I guess I'll give up on this forum. Me and a few thousand guitar players rest a pinky on the instrument and here I am being told I play wrong. There are plenty of asses on FB, I really hoped this group would be about the guitars and not snobs.

I have a TON of piezo electric experience on the engineering side. My designs have been on stage with artists from Johnny Cash to Stevie Wonder. I really hoped I could contribute to this group, but since I get called out for playing wrong....

In all fairness you did get your question answered. Yes, there are several products available to protect the top from pick or finger scratches.

In the case of pinky-planting (you, me and Doc Watson do it!) the key would be to keep your nails trimmed.
If you construe that as me offering you advice on personal hygiene... then that's too bad. Maybe you came with a presupposed bias.

You should hang around and we can discuss ways to keep from gouging out a fret board with your fingernails as well.

No, Farcebook would have a meme for that.

That was the "Humor Test". Humor is required on the OFC.

coxtor, I hope you stick around, but we do tend to not take things too seriously after the "real answer" to a question.

In all fairness, as most of the sound comes from the vibration of the top, anything touching the top from a finger to a stickon, and I'm sure a lot of research went into the "blob" that was on early Adamas guitars to ensure it didn't mess with the vibration too much.

In fact.. while I won't bore you with the details... there was an excellent sounding guitar made by Ovation that never made it full production because while it sounded fantastic unfinished, applying the finish deadended all the good properties.

So Al's comment was not out of line. We all have our ways of playing. While you keep a pinky on the top, others do not, and maybe even others just started and never thought about it and after reading this want to change..

Bottom line... it's all good. I would get the generic smartphone screen protector and cut to just the size you need. I can't see it doing any harm really and I doubt you'd notice any dampening.
