My cousin’s mother in law became a widow around a year ago. Her husband had what I gather from the description a reverse blue burst slothead Adamas. Apparently it lived in its case under their bed for years as the husband rarely played it. My cousin inquired about a selling price on my behalf. He told me she said three to four hundred dollars. I never learned much about Adamas models aside from them being a premium Ovation model. So, I’m of the opinion she’s leaving a lot of money on the table? The last thing I can do is take advantage of someone’s lack of knowledge, let alone a widow. The guitar is a two hour drive from me and she isn’t actively trying to sell it yet. I’m trying to figure out a fair valuation for it if I make the trip. I don’t really like eBay selling figures because they’re all over the map. Obviously I’d like to pay the least amount possible while not ripping the lady off. I’m cringing at the thought of my cousin someday saying to me his MIL said somebody told her she could’ve gotten a grand more for the guitar.

You should check what the model number and serial number are. That will give best idea of value. Probably worth not less than 1000, but could be many thousands if it is something rare or special.

+1 to what Standingovation said.get model number ,serial number, year and pictures, slothead Adamas are hard to find and generally fetch a premium.
Don't want to break your bank but if your looking to give her a fair price it could easily go for $3000 if it was something like this one .

Funny.. just last week I wrote a song about someone stealing a bottle of whiskey that had been left at a grave site in sentimental gesture. In the end the thief gets drunk and falls from the spillway at a nearby dam.. so you really don't want the "dead man's curse", right? If it's a $3,000 mint, and/or beyond your budget, consider telling her the actual "rough" value, and the potential hassle of selling it for that amount, then offer her what you're willing to pay in quick cash while explaining that it is all you can afford.. of course with your best humble face and language along with compliments about her deceased husband's choice of guitars. All would seem fair to me from that point.

Since you appear to be somewhat related, I would take $750 to pay for the guitar. Then after you get it home, check here with the sn, model #, etc., and pics if necessary to find out the real value. Then you can if necessary call her up and explain you discovered the guitar was worth more than you thought and you would like to send her XXX additional dollars.

All of the above make sense...they are from people who know...and they are good people. A picture texted to you and then forwarded can tell most of us here a lot - just make sure the whole guitar is in the shot - I ran across a nice one sitting the corner of a shop in Atlanta years ago.... And where in Texas? - there is an old fillin' station operator turned cattle breeder who can offer advice...

A rarely played Adamas slothead under a bed...
That's an attention-getter.

I have lots going on in my life and haven't found time to pursue this. Yesterday I was at an open mic where a guy was playing an Adamas. It was a reverse blue burst but not a 12 fret or slothead. It had an enviable tone being played fingerstyle. I talked to him about it afterwards. He said he wanted to show me his biggest complaint about it. He said they come with a walnut fingerboard and in just a few years he wore very deep divots in it around the first five frets. He invited me to feel them but the depth was plainly visible. He said he'd like to send it in for a fingerboard replacement but the company was out of business. I told him I thought the new owners still had a repair department. He was under the impression the whole company was nonexistent. I told him he should check out this forum for answers.

The walnut fretboards I've got wear like iron. Much harder and more durable than rosewood or ebony. ???

I own OSH#43. The fretboard while it has mojo (Sweat and Oil) stains - it is not indented much. Playing an instrument with natural construction materials is over years and years of playing going to show wear. Also fretboard replacement if needed is not a troubling issue...Contact a current authorized dealer - who can connect you with the repair shop. They recently did some bridge work for me. Send us a pic when you get a chance - we are all here to help.

Ellem Ennopee - He said they come with a walnut fingerboard and in just a few years he wore very deep divots in it around the first five frets.

Those walnut fretboards were resin-impreganted. Very tough. Mine has endured 36 years without any diviot issues.

Just my 2 cents.

I read that you're busy... have you done any searches for Adamas Slotheads?

Did you ever decide to do anything? Listing it anywhere? It sounds lovely and I've been lurking waiting for the news

I asked about seeing the guitar. I was wrong about it being two hours away. It’s actually a four and half hour drive. I’m considering making the trip next weekend. I’m gonna have a grand on me and WILL explain that the guitar is likely worth more, along with the assurance I have no intention of profiting from it. It seems like the right thing to do?

Yep - A cheesy cell phone pic would speak volumes enough to tell the location of the decimal point.

HMMM...what is the price new for an Adamas I slothead? That is if you could buy a newly made one that would be a custom order.

Anyone that is considering whether to buy an Adamas I slothead should play one.
They are unique (best of the best). My position is that the starting price should be a minimum of $3,000-$3,500.

Think about it…my 47RI (acoustic) was approx $3,200. The a/e OFC guitar with a special case was $5,000…(case was about $700 so guitar was approx $4,300.

Anything else is in my position is "bottom feeding".

A brief update on this. I still haven't made the long drive out to see this Adamas. I have talked to the widow though and asked her if she's aware of what her husband possibly paid for it. I explained that it might possibly be worth substantially more than her asking price. She said it wasn't doing anyone any good right now and she didn't care what it might be worth. She said the money wasn't important to her as she was doing well financially. She told me "if you want it and can play it come and get it". She was insistent about it. I asked if she could snap a cell phone pic and text it to me. She told me the number I called was a landline and she didn't have a cellphone but offered to find a pic of her husband playing it and mail it to me. She said she remembered once her husband got it out to show to some guys who were at their house, one of which played guitar. She said the guy wanted to buy it right then but her husband said it wasn't for sale. I asked if the guy ever made an offer on it and she said no but he sure did want it. She had no memory of who he even was. I told her not to worry about finding a photo that I'd just find time to make the drive to pick it up. Now I've got to juggle it into my tight schedule for the next whole month!

That's a tough problem to have to deal with!! Just to pick up an Adamas from someone who doesn't care about the money! If you can't fit it into your busy schedule you could always ask someone here to help you out and take it off her hands. Club members are always willing to help another member in his/her hour of need!!

I don’t know where I got the idea it was a slothead 12 fretter. The bridge isn’t even a carved one like what I’m assuming are the premium Adamas models. Still , for free I guess it’s worth it to plan a trip.

If you posted pics they are not visible,a number of the adamas guitars used the more traditional ovation bridge,if its an Adamas II it will still have the textured top and suspension ring.If its free and an adamas you can't go wrong
