As a convenient (sort of) humidifer, why not velcro a small sponge to the rear access hole, so in use or not it would always be in the guitar? I can’t see where acoustically it would make much difference, and plugged in, i would expect none.

Your thoughts?

Room Humidifier:

  • enter room and service the device

In-case Humidifier:

  • open case and service the device

Internal, Porthole Attached Humidifier:

  • place guitar face down on an appropriate surface
  • remove porthole cover
  • service the device
  • reinstall porthole cover

We rely on the first two methods.

The internal, porthole attached humidifier, adds handling of the guitar.

I use room humidifiers. They keep the humidity quite stable. My guitars stay out on stands or hangers, so little sponges would be of no use.

When I take a guitar for several days I just make sure to take either an Adamas or my Composite Acoustics Cargo (100% carbon fiber) travel guitar.

You could use a syringe and length of tubing to wet a sponge internally mounted in your guitar. Though I find it hard to believe, knowledgable people say damp sponges in a closed case do a pretty good job of humidifying.

A small sponge will need to get dampened with water possible every three days or so, so ease of access is important, and even a syringe with tube may be tricky not to put too much water on it. For my Adamas, best solution is to store the case flat instead of upright and then hang a regular Oasis into one of the upper bout epaulet holes so the source of moisture is as far away from the electronics as possible. I also tried a small sponge in the case near the headstock, but that resulted in some mould growth on the headstock and tainted tuners, so I wont put anything damp in that area again.

I also have the good fortune to have a room with all the guitars on the wall and stands. A large room humidifier is essential. Mine holds about 4 gallons of water. We live in a dry climate, with summer humidity down below 30%. I only need to fill it about every week in order to keep the room at 40%. With the furnace running in the winter in need to fill it every couple of days. I use a 1 gallon jug with a spout for watering flowers that I can fill in the bathroom sink. Pretty convenient.

Actually, a garden of old used up Ovations laying on their backs with necks somewhat elevated, arranged in whatever order with flowers in the sound holes might be kinda cool. Maybe some ivy growing up the necks. I'm up for it. Anybody have any donors?

What about the electric devices? Did you ever measure the humidity in an Ovation bowl with a fresh humidifier in it? I never use humidifiers on guitars with active electronics, I always take care of room climate.

On second thought, yep, you're right, Dave. Please forgive my shameful blasphemy and momentary lapse of better judgement. What WAS I thinking?? So... anybody have any acoustic Fenders?

Oh, man, I just did it again, didn't I? Insult to injury. Might as well tie me to the steps of the Mothership and give me 40 lashes.

Perhaps a junker from the pawnshop would make a good garden prop. I may actually do this!

I have to admire a man who can admit when he may possibly have erred in judgement and is not afraid to admit it to the world at large! Myself I have erred too many times to count!

Oh, man.. now we're all cracking on the edges. Doomed, we are. First I go awry. Then you call me on it (though twice redacted). And now FlySig is actually considering it! Could it be because we're all Utah blood? Something in the water perhaps?

Something in the beauty of the canyons and the mountains that leaves us enchanted and sometimes inured to the reality of dealing with the travails of daily life! FlySig has the added advantage of seeing it all from above!
