| Hello! I've been playing guitar for a handful of years and I've always been interested in Ovations. This forum looks like a great resource and community!
I've played one or two Ovations briefly and enjoyed the acoustic sound. I mostly play a dreadnought Yamaha FG800 which I've added a JJB SBT pickup to; I think it sounds great plugged in and acoustically.
Anyway, in my limited experience, I've found Ovations to have an appealing acoustic sound and playability, so I'm interested in owning one. However, shops in my area do not stock them, so I can't try out new ones, and I'm unsure about different models, pre-amps, and pickups. A good plugged-in sound, similar to the guitar's unplugged sound, without 'piezo quack', is important to me. I'd like to go straight into a mixer/PA.
On to my questions...
1. I've been watching YouTube videos of Ovations plugged in vs mic'd. I always like the mic'd tone, but sometimes the plugged-in tone has a really strong 'piezo quack' that I don't care for. Sometimes even the same model can sound good or 'quacky' in different videos. Why is this?
2. Are there certain pickups and pre-amps that give a more realistic approximation of the guitar's acoustic voice? How do older systems compare to newer?
3. How does something like the current CE44 compare to an older Celebrity or base Balladeer? Again, plugged-in tone is important to me.
4. I have a budget of about $500. Are there models I should look for? Again, plugged-in tone is important to me :-)
Thanks much,
Alex

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | If I was looking to spend $500 on an Ovation I would be looking for a Used USA-made model.
Reverb, eBay, Craigslist.
That is where all of my guitars came from... There, and Here!
