Long time lurker, first time poster. I have a couple ovations and my son who is a far superior player has recently expressed interest in one of his own. In particular, he eyes my 1993 5869 5p Custom Legend. It ticks all his boxes with black finish (even the black pearl finish of the 5p) the abalone bound body, fingerboard, and ring, carved bridge and gold hardware. Bottom line, he loves the bling - of course it plays really well to but he has a few of guitars that play well and the sound is great.

To that end, it would seem I have a few options in finding him one he likes as well and more options with trade offs. There are a couple Di Meola's on reverb; a 1999 and 2008. Any construction or major differences in those two other than some of the cosmetic (the '99 has a larger more decorative ring). They don't have the abalone fingerboard but that's about it.

I've been keeping an eye out for any Nakao's but yet to see any. Leads are appreciated, lol.

I gather some of the collector series had abalone fingerboards, etc.

Any other suggestions are welcome. Doesn't have to be a center sound hole but a cutaway is probably a must for him.

I like that a lot. Thanks. Anyone want to part with their black one, lol. I’ll pay up for the right condition. I like the one off burst too.

The number of models with the abalone around the fingerboard is limited, besides the 87C there is the "book elite" and the Nakoa series, there may be some special order guitars with that added bling on them to,the production model Custom Legend and Custom Elite have pretty nice inlay work and great tops and tone and while not easy to find at least had greater production numbers.
The main difference between the early Al DiMeola and the 1769ADII is the second generation uses the newer lyrachord GS bowl which is lighter and more resonant, the 1769ADII also has the newer OP Pro preamp, with the inlaid rosette.
Most of the guitars we are talking about are deep bowls are I think your 5869 was a mid-bowl not sure how much that matters to you, personally I'm a huge deep bowl fan I just wanted to mention it.

Thanks 2WDrummer, I actually like the deep bowl myself too - in this case any depth will do. And thank you for the summary - spot on. Its a bit of a treasure hunt and finding the right person at the right moment of weakness (lmao) who wants to sell it. The hunt continues...

Don't know if anybody is in the LA area, but if you're looking for bling and rarity, I just came across this.

Sold! Mission accomplished. That is about the craziest thing ever for a model with only 150 made. Now do I keep this one (better shape) and give him mine Probably we’ll just keep mine out to play since it’s all set up and keep this this one in a safe place... You guys are the best!

Congratulations cjdoors! And a great assist to falknerbrad! That looks really similar to the Al Di Meola model. Just beautiful! Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm. Since I'm on the other side of the Pacific, your secret is safe with me... Lol!

The biggest difference is this is shallow and looks wise has finger board binding. The finish is also sparkle black as opposed to regular black.

Its going to be fun Christmas morning!

Just to close this out - it was a great Christmas.

I wanted him to have it on the wall with his other guitars so its visible and gets played but still humidity controlled so also ordered an acrylic wall case from Amazon. He saw the case I had ordered for him in the app. and slipped by making a comment showing he assumed he was getting an acoustic guitar of some kind - ah, a teaching moment!

I kept sending him reverb posts asking if he liked this one or that one right up to the end. Christmas morning we did NOT give him the guitar (at least not right away) - told him the case was expensive and now we had time to find him a guitar for his birthday in March... He looked bummed but sucked it up. We finish presents and started eating breakfast when I had him go get me something from a bedroom where I had conspicuously put the guitar. He came back with it puzzled - we had him open it and he loved it. I think he will be more careful next time so he doesn't ruin the surprise! Adding a couple photos too - Thanks again for helping find this gem!

Joe
