Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | Ok... after posting MANY threads about purchasing the CL version of the flag guitar, I’ve accepted the fact that it will very difficult to get one of these in the near future... So ... I have question for Al or any of the shadow members here that may still work for the company.
Is it plausible to send a guitar in and have them refinish the top with the coveted flag motif? |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I don't know the answer to your question but just a suggestion ... you might want to try talking to somebody who does custom motorcycle painting. I'm guessing that if they could do something like this (below) that they could probably do a pretty bang-up job on your guitar.

If worse came to worse I could have someone who does custom paint jobs do it, but it seems it would be better done through a guitar shop that has done them before. Putting paint on a guitar is something I’d only trust to an expert. It seems like they’d have to remove the bridge and neck and sand the top down first.(???)

That's what I'd do.
Pull the top off and replace it with a new one, preferably a torrefied one.
The tricky part is that it would be like doing a sunburst where the paint job is scraped off the binding/purfling.

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | I was thinking about using a Custom Legend or Elite with an abalone trim, so it would be similar to the way the originals were done. Since the factory did a long neck elite that way, I thought they still had the capability. |

I forget... it’s still the holidays. Probably nobody working at this time.

There is an Ovation Instrument Collectors page where a number of the guys who used to work at the factory post from time to time if you ask about the flag paint scheme there you might get some better answers.

Mike does custom paint jobs for over a dozen guitar companies and also directly with the music stars.
He also builds fine instruments, custom paint jobs for motorcycles, etc.
He is not cheap ( none of the good one are) but I can guarantee he would do a fabulous job.

He's going to look though his paperwork to see what guitars his shop did and who did them and he will be calling me back to as he put it... "share some trivia I can win a few beers over." |

Location: So Cal | Another way could be using a water slide decal and a clear top coat. It is a technique used often on custom bike paint schemes...guitar would be easier as the tops are flat. Just sayin' |
