I recently purchased a beat up 69 Thunderhead. The laminate is peeling up badly from water damage. I don't think the top and back are salvageable. The rest is in good shape. I'm sure it will need new pots. I thought of peeling up the remaining veneer and sanding what's underneath, then maybe give it coats of poly. OR-learn how to re-laminate it. OR find a body for it. Would appreciate thoughts and suggestions. Thanks. Ed

There's a Thunderhead body on eBay right now. Deeper than a regular t-head though.

Not mine ... I just saw it a couple of days ago and it looked interesting. Might be just what the doctor ordered for you. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks bobbo,I checked it out. Its nice, but nothing's drilled. Not even the neck joint+no center block. Before I spend $100.00 I'll try to fix what I got. Maybe a decent used one will turn up. I'll try my hand at laminating first.

I didn't see that auction. Very cool. If I had the money I'd buy it and just stick it in a corner or give it to Woodrow....

Woody would know better than I, but it seems to me that drilling and finishing the unused body would be far simpler than relaminating the one that's got water damage. It's not easy to salvage a piece of plywood after it's been wet.

Thanks man,I think I'll wait&see what I can figure out,or what pops up. Right now $100.00 is more than I want to invest in this piece. The easiest thing is to find a used body in the mean time. I can't screw it up any worse than it is.+theres no center block in that prototype body. Hmmmm I could glue sea shells ,or acorn caps to it,then clearcoat---Ha! Treebark?linolium? Just kidding.

Would be interesting to see the actual dimensions.

I'm not sure why, but I'm thinking Typhoon bass body. Maybe it's the depth, Just something doesn't look like thunderhead/tornado to me.

OK, I'll address my new Ebay prize in another post.
Let's help Ed.

If you refinish the Tornado be careful on not sanding through veneers.

Look at Jerome's site for the best reference photos.

How can I send pictures? No worries about sanding thru the veneer---most of it fell off the back, what's on the front is moldy and curled up. Some spots like the upper horn, and above the top F-hole are ok. The lamp base idea did cross my mind.Ha! The underneath has some glueable cracks, but no damage otherwise. Might have to break the V&T knobs off & replace them with new ones as they are petrified. I'm in no rush-I got plenty of guitars--love to restore old archtops. So far no experience with laminates tho.
