Hello good people!

Here's my story on being here at OFC: A coupla days ago I purchased a 1995 Elite Standard 6778 (made in New Hartford with the greenburst finish) for $300. The guitar is in immaculate shape except the access door on the bowl is missing its screw and has been sloppily glued back in place. The glue isn't a strong bond and I can remove the door if I so chose but I'm not sure if it will stay in place once removed.

So, if I may ask the wisdom of the community here; is this a difficult/costly repair? I can't seem to find any diagrams showing how the screw/cover work.

I've played some friends O's across the years and could never get comfortable with them while sitting down. Acoustically I felt they were a bit thin, but alright for stage performance when amplified.

When I plugged the Elite into my Marshall AS50R to check the electronics, I WAS BLOWN AWAY by the perfect acoustic guitar sound. Then I plugged it into my '65 reissue Deluxe and Twin. Still, amazing sound! Even through my '75 Vibro Champ this thing sounds fabulous. Is there any amp this thing doesn't sound good through?!? I was going to give this guitar as a gift but I'm afraid it's just too good to part with.

Long story, long: Here stands a player of 25 plus years finally recognizing O's for just how outstanding they are. I am humbled in your presence.

Thanks for your time!

Before you take to manhole cover off, look inside the holes with a flashlight to see if there is any of the "framework" still attached to the back of the hole.

Here is "Maggie" who is a 6778LX... (she was in the stand, just waiting for this)

Here is what the inside of the manhole cover looks like...

So, if the innards are still in there... Take it off and take it down to a hardware store to find a machine screw that fits that nut by thread and pitch.
To remove the cover, you lift it a little and slide it off-center to get part of that contraption to come out, then remove the whole thing. To re-install, you reverse the process.

If it turns-out that you do not have the apparatus attached to the innards, someone here may have one.
Or you could contact the MotherShip.

If the screw is missing... and the screw holds the inner framework in place...
Well, you know where this is going. Contact Mr. B @ Ovation Customer Service. You need a new manhole cover.

Well, this guitar needs a new cover...

Thanks for the instructions and visual aids Mr. Arthur.

Waskel,Your post pretty much summed-up the sinking feeling I had that since there was glue present, no screw, and nothing rattling around inside the guitar it was replacement time. Are these easily attainable? Are they costly? And where exactly does the Elite I now own fit into the hierarchy of Ovation desirability?

Thanks again for your time. I greatly appreciated the help.

6778's are great guitars. I think you'll find the CS at Ovation very helpful.

My first O is a New England Burst 1994 6768...still sounds great after all these years. Its the deep bowl model, and it has put those "thin sounding Ovation" arguments permanently to rest among my friends.

Can't say exactly how much a new manhole will cost you, as I've never had to replace of fix anything on the guitar. Guess that kind of speaks to the quality and durability of USA Os. I can't imagine this will set you back much though...
