| Hi. I've never owned an Ovation before, and recently saw one online that I'd like to buy - the 2001 Collector's Series with the redwood top. Structurally it seems in good shape, but the finish is cloudy/milky in several spots. Most of the issues concerning Ovation tops deals with splits, but I can't find info on how to remove or polish the finish. It's a gorgeous top and I'd like to know if it's possible to bring it back to its original state. Let me figure out if I can post a pic... Thanks very much. |

I have made you a full member and moved this post into the main forum where more people can respond. cloudy/milky is usually due to temperature change, but I too have honestly never seen this on an Ovation. But I'm sure some of our more knowledgable folks may have some ideas and may have seen it and will respond. Again, Welcome. |

Location: Utah | The Ovation clearcoat is very tough to remove chemically. There is possibly one product out there but it requires serious protective equipment for the humans. Idk how safe it would be for the wood itself. Otherwise you will have to sand it off, which is also not easy because it is a tough material.
I always recommend seeing the instrument in person before buying if there are any questions at all about the condition.
And, beware of scammers. They seem to be coming out of the woodwork these days! Ask for a few extra photos of perhaps atypical areas of the instrument not in their pictures already. Ask where the guitar is located, and ask to zoom or facetime with them before agreeing on any deal. Scammers typically copy photos from old listings or other websites and then create a temporary fake online account (facebook, ebay, etc). You send money, they disappear, the guitar never arrives. |

| Thanks for the replies. I tried to post a photo, but wasn't successful. The stain or imperfection doesn't totally cover the front, just near the neck at at the bottom. I could live with it I guess, but it's a shame considering pristine examples of this guitar I've seen on other sites. And it seems cheap - $500. |

Location: When?? | In the photo, the spots near the edges look like the finish is oh-so-slightly separated/lifted from the wood. Like maybe tiny leaks along the edges and binding have let humidity/moisture seep in between the finish and wood over a long period of time. If that's the case, polishing will not help it. Finish removal is most likely the only remedy for that issue (see FlySig's post above).
Do you have knowledge of where and how it has been stored prior to your purchase?

| I haven't communicated with the seller. The guitar is in Singapore, a pretty humid place. When something like this occurs, is it ongoing, or will it stop if the guitar is properly taken care of? |

Location: When?? | If the damage is what I described, it could possibly stop expanding if the guitar is brought to an acceptable humidity. Or not. Hard to say for certain. However.. I am personally in agreement with FlySig. I would pass on this guitar (assuming you are in the USA) since overseas transactions and transport issues [think shipping damage] from unknown sellers can often turn into a total and complete pain, as well as there being numerous other Ovations of many different models available here in the states for a decent deal.

| Thanks for the advice. I'll pass. I am actually making a trip to Singapore in 6 weeks and was scouting out guitars there, but there are a couple of others I want to check out. Singapore is a great place for used acoustics, mostly obscure Japanese models - Daion, Tokai, Morris. I think this round hole version of the 2001 Collectors was mostly a Japanese release. |

Location: When?? | Somebody help me here.. since I cannot recall exactly how it worked.. but there was some type of design or logo or something on [I think the heel] of Ovations which were marketed in Japan that was uniquely interesting. Maybe the ghost of Arthur can post a link to it. Lyle guitars were also a brand out of Japan back in the 60's, and my brother brought one home from Vietnam when I was a kid. I ended up with it for many years and it was a nice guitar. Anyway.. since you are headed directly to Singapore, please keep us posted on your interesting finds while there!

Quite an ample supply, and some decent deals, too. It seems that our main Japanese counterpart here on the OFC (Ken in Yokohama) always has an Ovation or Adamas onboard with him in one direction or the other every time he travels to the states or heads back home. |

| Yeah, that's what I want to do. I've got a trip planned from Singapore to Thailand. I'll check the shops in Singapore, but there are many guitars online too. I'll find one that's new to me, that I won't worry about too much, buy it in Singapore, then bring it on the trip up. I've been through there before and I've found some cool stuff. |

| Hi everyone. I recently visited Singapore and Malaysia (where I still am) and wanted to report on any interesting used guitars in the area. Not much in the shops, except new Chinese guitars. I saw zero Ovations but a few on a site called Carousell (Custom Legend 1869 for $1200, a double neck for $1800, cheaper Korean ones, but nothing I wanted). In Malaysia I found a MIJ Aria classical for around $30, but was too late. But I did find an old solid top Yamaha that sounds great (g245s) and bought it for $85. There were a large amount of higher priced classicals in Singapore too |

Location: Utah | Yamaha has put out some really good sounding guitars. My first real guitar, which I still have, is from around 1973. It's a Yamaha copy of a Martin and it sounds really good. It needs a neck reset at this point, so I keep it in open G tuning for less tension. Anyhow, there's a strong fan followng of Yamaha guitars. |
