Do 1975 era Deacon models have binding over the fret ends or frets on the binding? I'm checking out an old Deacon that may be a refret and wanted to confirm how they originally left the factory. Thanks.

Frets on the binding. But that doesn't mean it hadn't been re-fretted.

The binding on my Deacon covers the end of the frets. If you look at the neck from the side, you don't see the fret ends.

None on mine, but I've got a 12. And definitely not in the way the fret ends are covered by the binding on my Hamers. Maybe mine had a refret at some point but I don't see any irregular cuts on the binding where I'd expect to see some evidence.

Maybe Mr. Ovation or someone from the factory can shed some light on this.

To my knowledge, ends are NOT covered. The edges of the frets go OVER the binding.

Custom or refret are possibilities. One of the easiest ways to tell if its a refret are the actual frets. Again (caveat = "to my knowledge") Ovation's frets were proprietary. So if you can compare to any of the same era Viper, Deacon, Preacher necks.. the frets should be the same (shape and size). If not, probably a re-fret.

I have the Woody Uber-Deacon...
I am not sure if this neck is a Deacon neck, or a Preacher Deluxe neck.
It is a Woody project, and somewhere I thought that I read about a Preacher neck.
Woody would be able to answer. But I think that they are the same neck anyway.
But I think that that binding goes over the ends of the frets.
You be the judge...

I put mine away, but I think it's like Arthur's. Got it lightly used in about 1975. I have a pic on the Ning site but it isn't a closeup: http://api.ning.com/files/rixzV1o0B7CZmzmRS8MBIIcWkhvVHgaCTjpXj9GlL...

Here's a Preacher Deluxe from eBay where the frets seem to stick out a bit more (is this "frets on the binding"?): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230531865952

Well, I stand corrected...
Mine is Obviously a Deacon Neck. (I need to research before I type)
Now here is the question...
Do they put the frets on before they install the binding, or after?
