Hello all

I found this site while looking for info on my old Ovation guitar I've had from my youth.I wanted to play when I was young and bought my Ovation new in 1977, it is a 1612-4. I strummed around on it for a year or so but never really learned to play much. I've kept that guitar for 33 years occasionally picking it up and messing around with it.Starting about 6 months ago I decided to finally seriously try to learn to play. I've been focusing on finger style and having a great time. Besides just having fun reading about other members experience's with playing I hope to get advice about songs to learn, getting a new pickup for my Guitar and suggestions on which of the newer Ovations I might want to look into. Looking forward to future posts.

Thanks
Ray

Welcome aboard Ray! I'm new here myself. I'm envious that you kept your old Ovation all those years. I bought an 1121-1 in about 1973 and later sold it. I sure wish I'd kept it.

Spend some time searching the forums. There's a wealth of information here, but I bet you've already figured that out. :)

Hi Nick

Over years there were a few times I thought "What am I keeping that thing around for"
but decided to hang on to it anyway. My son who is 18 discovered it a few years ago and that started his interest in playing. I credit him for renewing my interest. He is now deep into playing guitar and piano, although his music ( Speed Metal)is a bit different then what I play. We still find common ground to jam around occasionally.

Thanks for the welcome.
Ray

Hi! and welcome to both Ray and Nick!

Ray, we'd love to see a pic of your baby - 1612s are a favorite around here!

And Nick, prowl the "For Sale" board because 1121s show up - they are also really popular and you can score one pretty reasonably.

Thanks to both of you for posting!

Thanks Mitzdawg.
I've got it on the list:
1) Original Slothead
2) Any guitar owned by Cat Stevens
3) Shiny bowl (Josh White or Balladeer)
4) 1972 or 1973 mint 1121-1

(in no particular order of course) :)

Welcome Ray!

My first Ovation was the Custom Balladeer 1112-1 similar to yours but without the preamp and with a burst. I actually did sell it but got it back later.
Enjoy.

Welcome Ray!!

There are a lot of "free" online sites that have songs with Lyris & Chords. Some even show "tabs" for fingerstyle and flatpicking.

All the songs are "transcribed" by guitar players and are not always 100% accurate, but most are pretty close. I like Chordie.com as you can change the Key of the song. There are also a plethera of You tube videos out the to learn from.

Welcome Ray

Glad to read that you are learning fingerstyle.
Any fool can strum... I stand as an example of this.
I wish I had started with fingerstyle.
Slowly I am trying to unlearn bad habits and learn to put down the pick.
But it is hard... And my desk is covered with picks! :p

Welcome Ray!

There are actually lots of sharks on this forum (insert Jimmy Buffett lyrics here), but we mostly just stalk guitars. :p

That's a pretty ambitious list, I wonder if anyone here has all four of those?

Nick B., You most definitely belong here. ;)

Thanks MWoody and Mitzdawg

How do I get to post in the regular forums, I can't seem to locate the info on what I need to do next. I want to ask some advice on the newer Ovations, or newer than mine anyway.

Thanks
Ray

Welcome Ray!

As far as getting a new pickup for your guitar...if you're sure it's just a pickup you need, someone here might have one. Start a post asking for one specifically. Or you can get one from the Service Dept. at the factory.

Hi bauerhillboy

I guess I'm not really sure what is wrong, It worked at one point but it's so far between times I plug it in I'm not sure when it worked last. I have a fresh battery in it but just have nothing at all coming out. If I understand this correctly there is a pickup and a Pre-amp? Are there any known troubleshooting steps?

Thanks
Ray

After the battery, I always check the jack. Move it around and see if you get any noise. Then a little gentle shaking to listen for loose wires sliding around. I've never had to go past that point. I've had broken wires going to the jack and wires that came off between the battery and preamp. Hope your fix is as easy.
There is also a wire to the pickup, but I've never had one of those come off. Have you taken the saddle (pickup) out lately? I put a shim in wrong once and couldn't get all the strings to respond.

Thanks Mark in Boise

When changing the strings I decided to take your advice and check out the wiring, the fix WAS easy. On the volume control module the wiring has a jack that plugs into the module, The jack was partially plugged in. After making sure it was plugged in it works perfect. Thanks for your help on this.
