I have heard quite a bit about the different materials for guitar picks and was wondering how many of you have used ivory guitar picks and what do you think about them. I've got a few ivory scraps and was thinking about shaping a couple and seeing how they compare to the regular plastic ones.

Wouldn't ivory be too brittle?

There are some online stores that sell them. I called and asked the same question and they said most people prefer the 1.0 to 1.5 thickness' and seem to last forever! Way thicker than anything I have used up to this point.

Yikes. That would be like using a Necco.

it might be interesting to make them in the mold of the Stubby.

I've come to appreciate thick picks...

(I said, "PICKS"!)

We had a member here a while ago (from the Keys) who was selling picks made of lignum vitae.
I bought one, and it was pretty cool (tho it added a bit of a dark, "woody" tone). Touted to be virtually "indestructable". I broke it.
(Though I must admit, I foolishly did it by using it in a pinch to tighten a microphone clip.)

I was then made a gift (by Master Templeman) of a genuine tortoise-shell pick. Touted to be virtually "indestructable".

. . . let's just say that I'm NOT the person to have expensive, exotic, "indestructable" picks

I really like Clayton ultem picks.

Dunlop makes similar picks.

The thick picks are used alot in Gypsey music. There is something to a thick pick. I'll buy one from you if you ever get around to doing it. I think the stubby is about the right choice but maybe the standard shape would work as well?

I hadn't planned on making these for sale. Just to use myself or give as gifts. I completed the first one in the regular shape and it turned out very nice. I am going to work on a couple of the Stubby shaped ones today. The one I have completed sure has a woody sound to it. Very mellow. I'll give Ya an update with the other shapes later...

AFG, if there are any leftovers or rejects, I would love to get in line to get one after CWK2.
