"and decided that year-round buying and gift-giving was way more fun."
Good idea Prof.
Pam & I are heading more in that direction as well.

Must say we've discussed it as well and I wouldn't doubt that there comes a day where we end up with one little something under the tree and a vacation in January or something along that line instead.

Not quite Nerf but I guess it would save on dents.

In the pan at least.

pebble, all I can say is enjoy it (the lack of worry about gifts) while you can.

As for me, the gold / coral earrings have been bought. the problem is her birthday is coming up in early January. I like the TV for the bedroom, or a gift certificate at amazon for cookware.

I don't have anyone to buy for either. That's how I could afford to get that Hamer for myself.

Aside from assorted bobbles and chotzkies...

I'm building her a 12/11 Standard Hammer Dulcimer.

They couldn't pin that one on me.

I have this wicked splinter in my palm I just can't get out. Any suggestions?

An axe.

...ok, or a slice of potato. For some reason, a small slice of potato held on the sliver (by hand or a bandaid - though that might be difficult in the palm) seems to draw it out.
Make sure you wash the potato and the area well first.

Some people also claim a small amount of olive oil on the spot will help draw it out. Hold the garlic.

We've had a few episodes of the "lets not get any presents for each other this year" backfires. A couple of times I took her seriously and she was disappointed. Several times the other way. This year I was worried because she said she was going to buy a chandelier for herself and I had given her what I consider much nicer hints for me. Last night I read an email from our daughter that I wasn't supposed to. I knew that because our daughter told SWMBO to delete the email as soon as she read it. Of course, SWMBO didn't do that. Anyway, she's getting me a car wash kit that I asked her to buy for our daughter who just got the new car. I was hoping the ear surgery she just had on Monday would help these miscommunication issues, but I don't think hearing loss is the problem.

I've yet to see that work in our household. So this year it's shoes and an apron...

This is what you're supposed to hear, Mark: "My Cayman needs frequent car washes, especially in the winter".

Same thing she's getting me.....

... a pair of tires for the car.

Mine fit the front, her's the back.

Things are kind of tight this year and practical wins out.

I'm getting myself the rug that matches the new curtains. If Jack were here, he'd be getting old timey bluegrass or fiddle cds, practical stuff like flannel shirts and jeans, and I'd be getting whatever the kids suggested he get me. Bless his heart, there was this clueless streak that ran in his family (his dad had it, too), so Christmas morning was always a "hold-your-breath" experience when you saw his name in the "from" part of the tag. My blue-eyed fiddler definitely had an unconventional approach to gift selection......

Don't know what I got her, she buys stuff for herself. She never makes a list and refuses to name anything specific when I ask repeatedly. Then I'm in the dog house when I don't get that thing that she thought I knew she wanted. ?

If you are clueless, the best course of action is to ask her girlfriends. They'll help you out and save your butt. After a while, they'll also turn into your reminder service and personal shopper. Everyone wins.

We went the route of not exchanging presents last year as we were saving for our 25th anniversary trip to Italy. It was a greattrip but we decided that we would exchange presents again this year.

I got her a new suit for work from Talbots. Very expensive and she would never buy it for herself. That was the fun of it. I may add a little compact point and shoot dummy camera to the stocking so she does not have to haul her dslr to birthday parties. Money is the only factor holding me back. To tell you the truth I am married to a gem. I am a luck guy.

Bobbo, the Cayman is covered in the garage. It doesn't even need dusting. Richard Paul Evans has another couple books out that she doesn't have. That was a Christmas tradition that got derailed and will get back on track this year.
