Location: Tennessee | You need a dummy plug for it or else you have to be plugged in to use the tuner. There are different settings on VIPs destined for different guitars. Or so I understand. I like the one that's in my 07BCS. I like that it mutes the signal when you activate the tuner. Congrats. Let us know what you think. I like #3. |

My primary complaint is having to plug something into the guitar to use the on-board tuner. What were they thinking with that one? The Op Pro Studio just seems to offer a lot more in my opinion. |

Location: New Jersey | Even though I've had some challenges with my '07 BCS and had the option of replacing the VIP with the Studio, I just love the sounds I get from the VIP. I have a couple of threads about my pre-amp "woes"-but it looks like the third VIP was the charm. I've played it over the weekend and no more cutting out. Using the dummy plug to tune it is no big deal for me, since I pretty much tune it when I'm already plugged in to my amps. I switch off between settings #2 and #3. Down the road, I may grab a Studio just to have something as a different flavor, but I think the VIP is a great unit. Let us know how you like it. |

I have the VIP in an Adamas 2080. I've had the Studio in my Ovation '07 Collector Edition as well as the VIP it came with. We of course did a lot of mix/match around all the guitars in the house with other Op Pro versions and in a variety of O's and A's.
My opinion is that the VIP does much more in the Adamas than a wood topped Ovation. I find that there are one or two emulations which really sound good to me, and the others not so much. Less is more with the VIP and the Studio in terms of adding in the effects. Get your basic sound EQ set up with zero effect added in. Then run up the effect to about half. Tweak from there. The VIP can definitely help an Adamas sound as if it is mic'd when performing live, which in many cases is a plus. For recording I prefer to run a direct line out without any VIP effects, and then also mic the guitar. It gives more options when mixing.
The Studio was my favorite preamp in the wood topped Ovations. The VIP never sounded natural to me in any of our O's. I used the Studio for live performance as well as recording. The Studio sounded great in all of our O's. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | This thread reminds me of a question I've been wondering about for a long time. Do users find the variability of a VIP all that beneficial for live gigging? I find that I set the controls and very seldom change anything between songs, or during the entire gig for that matter. If anything, I might change the volume, but never do I change the programs or EQ settings (if I’m even using them). This pretty much applies to every A/E I use, regardless of the type of preamp. Does anybody really flip between presets on the VIP for different songs? I can understand why it might be important in the studio, when there’s lots of time to fiddle with different tone settings as pointed out by FlySig, but its different when playing live, at least for me. I dial in the sound that I like, then just leave it alone. I do the same with the Takamine CT-2/Triax combo, which also offers substantial variability. An exception is the piezo/humbucker pickup selector/blend dial on the VXT, which I use a lot for the obvious reason, but not so with the VIP acoustic modeling presets. The same goes for complex stomp boxes that offer lots of different modeling presets (I use the Zoom A2.1u for instance). Even with all the variation possible with this pedal, I only use about a dozen custom presets, the difference between them being the extent to which I’ve built in added effects, i.e., reverb, chorus, delay, tremolo, etc., and even so, the modeling foundation upon which each custom preset is based remains the same (the Martin OM setting). Again, just curious, does anybody really change VIP modeling presets between numbers when performing live? |

Location: New Jersey | I haven't taken the BCS out yet to play live, but I rarely stay with one "preset" or sound through an entire live gig. True, I may only have/need 2 or 3 settings, but depending on the song or what I'm trying to convey- maybe a smooth mellow kind of sound for a few songs and then something more"highs" heavy... again I haven't tried the BCS live yet, but noodling with it I like a couple of the settings which at least to my ears give me enough of a variation to make me like the VIP. And all I gotta do is turn that little button and maybe move the EQ sliders a bit. Just my 2 coppers. |

Location: Italia, Zianigo di Mirano (Venezia) | Well,..... as I said yesterday,reading the characteristics of the SET-4, I expect to see him in Adamas,not in Ovation 2007 BCS of my friend.I have two VIP-5 : SET-0 e SET-4 bought individually (with no guitar)to me they sound alike (equal).....maybe I just can not hear differences

Location: New Jersey | OK I'm confused- in the 0-6 list why isn't the '07BCS Collectors listed? I haven't checked to see if there is a set sticker on mine. Are the sets random for the BCS or is it always set 0 like bobbo's?

This preamp sounds awesome by itself. I'll keep the OP-50, but it's not going back in my Adamas. I am so happy.

There is no sticker on mine. But I finally got it. Love the way it sounds. 1, 2, 4 and 5 sound great with it. The cool thing is my feedback problems have vanished. This preamp sounds awesome by itself. I'll keep the OP-50, but it's not going back in my Adamas. I am so happy. AdamasW597,

Location: Northwest Arkansas | I guess the extra mid on the OP-50 made the difference. The guitar doesn't feedback like it did. Kinda weird, really. All I know is it sounds way better.

I think the preamp by itself is great. 1 and 5 work pretty good and I can't tell much difference with the others. I have no buyers remorse. It's a great preamp. I also turned it up on the inside. Whoever had it, turned it way down. A small screwdriver took care of that. I just bought another Crate CA-30DG acoustic amp. I'm going to run them stereo. They're great little amps. Plus, I got it for 60 bucks.
